Pandemic Price Gouging, Still Happening

I have been working through some health issues, so I am now just catching up. Sorry for the flood of posts today. Steve

* * *

The evidence is very, very clear that many corporations are price gouging to the point of price fixing (they are doing it out in the open now, so sure of their capture of the reins of government). This is nowhere near as detrimental to the American public (or as obvious) as in the oil industry. As much as 10% or even more of the inflation hit people have felt is due to the oil industry’s shenanigans.

The response from “industry pundits” is the typical “that’s how markets work.”

It is oh, so clear now that the much touted “free markets” are a deliberate fiction, never to have existed nor never will exist. Markets are always controlled. They cannot operate without controls. The question is whether you want markets to be regulated by governments, supposedly representatives of “the people,” or regulated by the industries themselves.

What we are seeing now is that the industries themselves want the latter. They want to be able to fix and control prices and therefore profits. And their guiding principles in doing so are not the betterment of one and all or “for the good of the country,” it is whatever lines their pockets with evermore cash.

  1. I dont know why this isnt getting more attention from the media. Food company profits have gone up at a rate that’s 5 times the rate of inflation the last few years. Five times the rate.

    During the pandemic and shortly after the profits of the big 4 or 5 meat packing companies that control virtually the entire US market went up 300%. That’s not a typo. Their profits went up 300% according to Reuters news. Tyson raised prices so highj that even though they’re selling less beef than ever, Tyson still made record breaking profits.

    • The media is too busy focusing on Trump. Besides, any attention to the situation would be to blame Biden.

      • Let’s face it, the whole system has fallen apart thanks to decades of politicians gradually eroding away the line between “lobbying” and campaign funding, and outright bribery. We just had Trump openly telling oil companies that if they gave a billion dollars to his campaign he would completely gut environmental laws. A few decades ago that alone would have put him in jail for soliciting bribes.

      • That is exactly correct. Trump has hogged all the news. Another reason Americans are so clueless.

      • Plus, the miscreants are doing it out in the open; they aren’t even trying to hide what they are doing, explaining the details in stockholder reports, for example.

  2. Markets my ass.

    It’s all about our money, going in their pockets, as fast as they can make it happen.

    I have learned to fucking hate corporations. All of them. Pretty much feel the same way with most politicians and SCOTUS judges too. Great time to be alive and have half a functioning brain, amirite?

    It just keeps getting better!
