Should We Treat Texas’s Self-Inflicted Wound?

In 2011, Texas faced a very similar storm that froze natural gas wells and affected coal plants and wind turbines, leading to power outages across the state. A decade later, Texas power generators have still not made all the investments necessary to prevent plants from tripping offline during extreme cold, experts said. These changes were not required of energy producers, merely recommended.

Other states can buy power from surrounding states to meet spiking demands. That’s because the continental US is powered by two big, highly connected grids: the Eastern Interconnection and the Western Interconnection. Texas, however, has insisted on having its own grid with little connection to the other two grids. It’s a point of pride for politicians there, who claim the state has “energy independence.”

So, even after seeing what can happen and being warned that extreme weather events are going to be more common dues to climate change, Texas took no action. Texas is also a conservative state that hammers home the principle of individual responsibility.

So . . .

So . . . the question is, should we, in the form of the federal government, bail out the state of Texas for their own bad behavior or should we insist upon individual responsibility of the state as a whole. This is a classic case, often used by conservatives, of a moral hazard. If we bail them out, we are rewarding their bad behavior. Heads they win, tails we lose.

This is compounded by the fact that the same thing happened ten years ago and all of the solutions to the problems then exposed were and are available and not particularly expensive.

Conservatives often say that we can “trust corporations as they would never do anything that would harm their reputations.” Apparently not.

  1. As I indicated elsewhere — a certain segment of the U.S. population believes in the total sovereignty of the STATE and badmouths those who believer otherwise.

That is … until they need HELP from that BIG, BAD Government!

    • I ain’t no socialist but if we was to be declared, you know, to be in a state of disaster, then we could, uh, acquire resources, you know.

  2. Who doesn’t prepare for a most critical time you actually need the power?
Sure we should help them. I’m guessing, but I do believe they pay federal taxes?

    • I believe Texas is one of those states which gets back more than it puts in, so as to “paying taxes” they are a bit short this month (and last month and the month before than and …).

  3. (Snark mode on) isn’t it unethical to help them? Think about it. Many, many, many times they have said that the federal government is a burden, unnecessary, and even evil. In addition they’ve even threatened to secede from the union multiple times. They have taken a strong, moral stand against the federal government. So therefore don’t we, as ethical beings, have an obligation to help them in upholding their decisions and permit them to indulge in their beliefs and refrain from giving them federal assistance? We wouldn’t want to make them look like hypocrites, now would we? (Snark mode off)

  4. Some excellent comments here Steve 😄 on the thick, impenetrable cranial density of my Lone Star State’s arrogant Red Conservative politics over the last 26-years, not just since 2011. The Republicans here also love to boast regularly of our “Rainy Day Fund” which is up into the billions now. HAH! Imagine that. 😒 Imagine that spent on necessary antiquated power grids, a gazillion outdated transformers across the state, that related equipment, and a long host of other public infrastructure neglect the last two decades. 😡

Bail out or save Texas? Hell tha rffin no Steve!!!! Please let over-inlated Red egos and pride eat tons of humble pie…

…all alone from the other 49-states. Apologies unnecessary if the U.S. doesn’t. 😄😉

    • Well, as you mentioned, isn’t that what their “rainy Day Fund” is for?

Hope you are safe and well, Prof!

      • Many kind thanks Steve. I am well enough, much better off than a majority of disadvantaged impoverished Texans. Of course, you know full well which demographic represents which. Senator Ted Cruz flew off to Cancun, Mexico to avoid hardships that Winter storms Uri and Viola reaked upon his own people. However, the bulk of HIS own Party members did not suffer like most Texans. But even in tRump’s party it isn’t about all fat Elephants. It’s always about #1, me… as tRump amply demonstrated for 4-years and to VP Pence, right?

Regarding that “Rainy Day Fund,” I and most intelligent non-Republicans know it WON’T go where it needs to go. Those zip codes are “free-loaders” and “socialists.” 🙄😡

        • Yeah, I noticed the rich sections of Austin and whatnot didn’t see rolling blackouts. Don’t want to piss off the donors.
