But Just In Case You Thought Women Were Good and Men Were Evil

This is from a “members only” post on Medium.com by Clem Samson entitled “Scientists: Your Sole Purpose is Reproduction.”

Evolution tells a nasty tale on the female of the species as well. While all the genes in the sperm of the male go toward the healthy growth of the fetus, the genes on the mom’s side actually combat healthy growth of the fetus in order to prolong the healthy life of the female. It’s something called imprinted genetics. The gene for healthy fetal growth is methylated into silence if it comes from the mother, and activated if it comes from the father.

While we think of Moms as so nurturing, nature has encoded a little secret tattle tale that shows them to be interested in their own survival first. It’s as though the mother doesn’t want the baby to be “super” healthy — just healthy enough, in a way that causes the mother the least damage, whereas the father doesn’t give a crap about the mom’s health, and activates all the genes to make a little super human inside that uterus — no matter how much damage the little bastard might cause.

    • Interesting. I have not evaluated these points as to whether or not they are value. Have you? You seem to have an opinion. Is it based upon the facts being claimed are false?

      • I need to see evidence of claim #1. ” all the genes in the sperm of the male go toward the healthy growth of the fetus, the genes on the mom’s side actually combat healthy growth of the fetus” Is it not possible the male has bad genes?

This: “It’s as though the mother doesn’t want the baby to be “super” healthy — just healthy enough, in a way that causes the mother the least damage.” Even if it’s factually true, it’s worded to make it sound like the mother makes the decision, not the body.

This: “whereas the father doesn’t give a crap about the mom’s health,” is also a tad presumtuous.

If all of this actually is the case genetically, evolutionarily, it seems to presume the participiants are “actively,” making these decisions, when it’s probably more of a natural occurence, with no input, (other than the sex that got the ball rolling,) from the people involved.

JMO. I don’t claim to be an expert, but something smells funny here.

  3. Unless I’m completely misunderstanding what’s being said here (which is a distinct possibility), this has nothing to do with how a person feels about their child and entirely to do with evolution. In which case, there’s not a whole lot to be done about it. It’s a bodily process, hormones and all. This “nasty tale” that evolution tells on the female of the species is completely out of the control of said female.

Mr. Samson is the one who lays the social and critical aspect over the subject. If (and I stress if) this is a true and accurate description of the biological process of the human body, I’d ask him to stick to the science.

  4. Well, of course biology is going to make sure that the mother’s life is taken care of before the fetus’. If there is no mother, there’s no fetus anyway. Talk about fake outrage.

    • Spot on as usual. This is the flaw in the anti-abortion argument. They act as if a women post abortion can’t decide to have more kids. This is their goose that laid the golden eggs fable.
