Ben Franklin once said, “Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.” A very wise man, Mr. Franklin. And I just had a scrap of bacon, from my partner’s platter she was fixing for her lunch (BLTs, yum!) and it tasted just so effing good.
I have been eschewing bacon, mostly, as I am trying to lose some weight, and not so much because I think bacon makes us fat, it doesn’t, but that I need manifestations of me exhibiting willpower, and giving up things you don’t like isn’t much of a show.
It the spirit of Mr. Franklin’s quip:
“Bacon is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.”
Pigs, not so much.
Tomatoes here are just starting to turn ripe so I could probably live on bacon and fresh tomato sandwiches until we run out of tomatoes. What is it about bacon that tiggers so many of us?

Evolution has prepared little jolts for us whenever we taste anything good. So, sweets are for instant energy, salt is for electrolyte balance, bitter things are likely to be poisons and are to be avoided, and fats/umami are for necessary building blocks of fat and protein. Fats also give us what the experts call good “mouth feel” which is also a trigger to keep eating. (Good shit, mangia, mangia.) This is why we have taste buds wired to detect those things.
Bacon is so good, it should have its own taste buds. :o)

Bacon is addicting, no doubt about it. And to that end, I beat the addiction around 7 or 8 years ago. Not bragging (well, maybe a little), just fact.

Bacon, carpaccio and steak tartare are my favourite things, but I cut out red meat on doctors orders years ago 😦

:o( indeed!
I am reading a book (Sacred Cow) that makes the argument that much of the anti-red meat propaganda is based upon bad science (well-argued and well-documented). This may be not the case for your situation, but mu experience is that doctors don’t know anywhere near as much as we think they do. His/her recommendation may be based upon bad information. For example, when I show a bit of cholesterol in my blood my doctor keeps recommending I take statins, and I refuse, because the World Health Organization has removed cholesterol from its list of things that represent dangers to our lives. And cholesterol research is also horrifically bad.

Does that mean I can drink and smoke throwing caution to the wind?

Only if you’re trying to get lung cancer, bladder cancer, emphysema, cirrhosis of the liver & early death. Most of my friends are dead from drinking & smoking.

I had stopped smoking at 38… Began again this year at 46 in hopes of saving the Dignitas money 😀

I refuse statins too. My doctors & my sister (who is an RN) keep telling me that my cholesterol is too high but the baseline for “high” cholesterol has been repeatedly lowered so that what was a normal cholesterol in 1970 is now considered high. I am repeatedly told that I am “at risk” for a heart attack, to which I reply that if I have to go, I would rather go with a nice, fast heart attack than a slow bout of cancer. But cholesterol in & of itself doesn’t cause heart attacks. This is based on “research” (actually, just causal observation) of men in the late 60s & 70s who had heart attacks & it was found that their cholesterol was higher than the average person. BUT they also smoked cigarettes, drank alcohol on a daily basis, often to access, had stressful jobs, & were often overweight. I don’t smoke cigarettes & I have never, I rarely drink alcohol at all anymore, & I haven’t had a job, stressful or otherwise in years.
In research from Europe, especially the Nordic countries, statins have been proven to cause problems like diabetes (especially in women), muscle problems, & dementia. Funny how dementia has become such a problem here in the States. Of course, Big Pharma loves nothing so much as creating problems with meds so they can prescribe more meds to “cure” the problem that was caused by the original med. (I love how the ads for med say this or that “can occur” like the medication had NOTHING to do with it. It’s called a SIDE EFFECT, assholes).
When I say this to my doctors, I get this snarky, “Where did you get your medical degree?” & I reply that I have a paralegal degree & degrees in English & History & research is my thing & you don’t need a medical degree to do research on medicine & meds. You just need to know what questions to ask & who to ask & where to look for the answers. I live within 5 miles of the State University of New York at Buffalo, my alma mater, which has more than adequate libraries for any kind of research I wish to do. The new medical campus is a two miles further in the opposite direction, but that also has an awesome library, which is open to the public. The librarians are always happy to assist with anything you want to know.

Hear, hear, tell ’em sister! (I have been saying the same things for quite some time. Doctors hear about most medications from the pharma companies selling the damned things. They have little to no continuing education requirements to keep their licenses, at least that is my understanding.)
Ah, my Queen, were that I were closer to pay proper homage.

With law, since laws are always changing, lawyers & paralegals are always having to learn. That’s why so many books in a law office are loose-leaf, so you can remove old pages & put in new ones, as needed.
The thing is, when I am researching ANYTHING, I check multiple sources. Doctors never seem to do this. I’ve had friends sicken & die because of having to take the time to get second & third opinions from various doctors & it seems to me ridiculous that the patient has to do the work that the doctor should be doing. I suppose that would cut into their golf game.

As bacon is one of the few things it seems prices come down on from time to time, we tend to have BLT’s once every couple of weeks. Cheap supper when you are feeding 4-5.
Mmmm Bacon!
