Creationists on the Rise!

I have been filling in a few holes in my viewing of late and I decide to give the HBO documentary  “Questioning Darwin (2014?),” another try. I only got a few minutes into the show the first time and this time I must have gotten a whole quarter of the way through. And, truth be told, it seemed fairly even handed. What I was shocked about is the sheer audacity of the cherry-picking of scripture by the Ken Ham crowd (Answers in Genesis, the Creation Museum, et. al.). When faced with the Problem of Evil, Mr. Ham simply shrugs this off because of all of the changes that occurred because of Adam’s “sin.” If it hadn’t been for Adam’s disobedience of God, we would all be living forever in a paradise … according to those given voice in this documentary.

But is this actually what scripture says? And, I do not here from the fact that the creation story in Genesis is actually a fictional tale meant to make spiritual points with Jews. These people believe that Genesis is historical truth, no doubt about it … even though the Jews, who are responsible for the existence of that book, claim otherwise. I am not starting there. I am working from the viewpoint of the people who believe that Genesis is either first- or second-hand knowledge of what really happened.

Let’s start with Adam’s disobedience of God’s instructions. Going against God’s instructions is the definition of Biblical sin. It is the Creationist’s definition of right and wrong, good and evil. But God’s admonition was: “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” Clearly neither Adam, nor Eve, understood the difference between good and evil, having not yet eaten from the tree, so what was the basis for the punishment?

The Creationists in the documentary essentially claimed it was Original Sin, although the idea of Original Sin doesn’t occur in the Bible, having been first alluded to in the second century by Irenaeus, Bishop of Lyon, and expanded in the fourth century by Aurelius Augustinus. But even if it isn’t mentioned, the source of Original Sin is God’s curse. God said that “when you eat from it you will certainly die.” But Adam and Even did not die, instead they were banished and their children were condemned as sinners before they were even born … with no way out from under that sentence for thousands of years. So, who created all of that depravity? Looks like “God did it,” is the answer again.

These Creationists also seem to think that Adam and Eve were immortal and that their sin brought death into the world. That is not backed up by scripture, because unless all of the animals were immortal, too, there had to be death. If they thought that Adam’s and Eve’s sin brought death to immortal humans, then why did God say: “22 … ‘The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.’” and then “23 So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. 24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.”

So, the whole point is that God showed no equanimity here. He could have just waved away Adam and Eve into nonexistence and then grabbed some mud to make a new Adam. He could have turned time back before Eve took her bite and strangled that serpent (it was not a snake; it had legs!). He could not have allowed the a serpent access to the Garden until Adam and Eve had had their shakedown experiences. He could have relented, restored them to their pre-bite status and warned them sternly to “Not do that again!” No, he condemns the entire race to depravity, hopelessness, and a Lake of Fire as a retirement home, for ever and ever, amen.

So, the Creationists are saying that the Book of Genesis is the literal truth but they have made up a whole lot of back story that is not in the Bible to support their worldview. In addition they have made up a whole lot of bullstuff about Darwin that conflicts with the historical record. They correctly, though, fully recognize that if Darwin is right, they are wrong. This is the source of their animosity. One commenter stated baldly that if he were not the subject of special creation, then he wouldn’t be “special,” he would be just another animal. He didn’t go on and say “And we all know that isn’t true …” he just left that hanging. Imagine, an argument that God has to exist because … ego gratification!

I just couldn’t finish the documentary because it is just so much bilge. They can indoctrinate their children and preach anti-Darwinism from their pulpits, but in the end God’s Creation will have the last laugh.

  1. Well, even by the bibles own chronology, Adam wasn’t responsible. Lucifer (Yhwh’s most beautiful creation) had already fallen, so Creation was already diseased. Yhwh, therefore was either staggeringly incompetent (creating man and casting him into a world already on fire), or thoroughly malicious. Neither option is particularly good for the theist.

    • Yeah, it is hard to make sense of stories when there is a character who is above criticism, no matter what he does or how dickish he behaves.

  2. Above criticism? No, I do not think that applies to Him, but to, you know, HIM.

  3. In my opinion (note I do not say IMHO, as I feel no need at all to be humble on this topic, it is all the fault of this man made doG. Stop for a moment and think just WHO planted those 2 trees. Yeah, it was this very doG of the holly bulbul who planted the damn trees. I came very close to being excommunicated from the Lutheran church at age 13 or 14 for asking this in Sunday school. Dad told me later that same day the he knew I no longer needed to attend either Sunday school or church. Dad had always been my very first hero, that day he went up even higher in my view of him.
Oh, Dad was fallible though. I still remember we were watching the Dorsey brothers TV show in about 1956 0r 57 and Elvis was on that night. After he did his song, Dad looked at me and said “You will never see that on TV ever again”. The very next week, same program, there was Elvis for a repeat appearance. Even at age 9 or 10 I knew better than to tell Dad he was wrong. Staying out of ICU was a much nicer way to live my life. Seriously, in my first 19 years of life I don’t think he ever hit me 5 times, always with an open hand on my hind end. Of course I thought his hand was about the size of a professional baseball catchers mit.
The biblical doG is a nasty of sod. Just read the book of Job as a prime example. Poor Job was supposedly a very religious/pious man, but doG and the devil made a side bet. All for the ego of this doG, poor old Job suffered more than the crap the CIA, NSA, etc.. have done to prisoners in Iraqi prisons and Gitmo. Plus this same doG of the bulbul is THE absolute mass murderer IF we accept that book of fables as true.
Personally, I doubt the old Hebrews were great conquers, they just moved into some new town and watched the property values fall like a rock, then took over the vacant buildings.
Oh, I am an old, broken down sarcastic sob.

    • And beyond all of that He created Adam because he needed someone/something to tend the Garden. He needed a Gardener! (Proof that Adam was a Mexican, or maybe a Japanese.)

How does someone who creates time and space, trillions of stars and planets, and all of the animals in the world be not able to create a Garden that tends itself? I imagine that question would have got you thrown out of Sunday School, too! ;o)

  4. LOL……THAT comment may have got me burned at the stake that very day…..Oh well, I never said I wanted to live forever. I’d have told them that the mythical Jesus was a Jew had I been allowed to keep talking. Their own book says he was, so why the xtians call the Jews “Christ killers” is one that always struck me as odd.
Yeah, I must have been born a sarcastic sob. I have always had a low tolerance for stupid and the older I get, the less I have for it. Oh rats, I’ve become more and more like Dad……LOL, but I see that as an improvement.

  5. The funny thing about creationism is that the bible forbids people from lying but in order to defend creationism you have to lie (or know nothing about science and history)

  6. Creationists have a deep concern about how we live our lives and they see the old moral certitudes breaking up and nothing to replace them.
They have also, in our western democracies, been brought up on Christian doctrines from the Bible and this is being removed by science and new concepts of reality.
Some have moved forward with the times and we now have big bang Christianity , women priests and same sex marriage. This has horrified some like Mr Ham and he has clung desperately to a literal interpretation of the Bible.
Genesis is about six thousand years old long before the scientific age had been conceived and it attempts to explain the moral nature of Man . Incidentally we still have not satisfactorily explained that for all of our advances. I think it does a good job ; morality comes with the knowledge of good and evil . Until we became self – reflective creatures there was no morality. Crocodiles cannot commit murder , tigers cannot be cruel but we can, because we judge our actions.

    • Re “Until we became self – reflective creatures there was no morality.” True, there was also no need. The creation of morality has been explained in terms of evolutionary advantage. This, as I mention, has been co-opted by Christian spin doctors as a gift from their god, which confirms that people are the real source of morals, not gods.

  7. I’m not quite sure what you mean by need so I take it to mean we lived in harmony with all of nature. Freud put it well when he said : we are at war with ourselves and that would apply to everyone religious or not that’s why that tree changed everything and the change has not stopped. Creationists are struggling like the rest of us with the moral dilemmas of our time. It could be that along with intelligence comes morality but perhaps
it holds back progress in our civilised world . We have rejected eugenics but Darwin considered it seriously it certainly goes against medical ethics but is it the way forward ? Is civilisation itself a form of suicide?
