Uncommon Sense

Freedom!! Freedom!!

The GOP advanced their Freedom Agenda today, when their hand-picked Supreme Court Justices overturned Roe v. Wade which established abortion as a valid option for pregnant women everywhere in the country.

By voiding Roe, the GOP’s minions have established their small government, freedom loving vision upon the country. The government is expected to stay out of the private lives of citizens . . . , uh, well, except when a woman gets pregnant and the state steps in and exercises control over that woman’s uterus.

No other organ is thus “protected” by the state. The state (federal or local) cannot require you to accept an organ transplant, nor require you to donate any of your organs to another (even blood). The state cannot require you to protect your heart and lungs by not smoking. But uteruses, well, they’re special, you see.

And while the SCOTUS justices may have been correct that the constitution right to privacy may not be the shield Roe needed, there is this small matter of . . . the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution which provides that “[t]he right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated.” So women are secure in their persons, except when the anti-abortion states step in and exercise control over their uteruses. And determining that a woman is pregnant, how is that not an illegal search? How does that make any sense at all? And what about “equal protection” of the law? The Fourteenth Amendment states that “No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States” but that apparently doesn’t apply to the United States collectively. So, in the United States, a women will get an abortion in one state and be arrested and tried for murder, but another woman, just on the other side of the state line, will get an abortion, paid for by her insurance company. This will happen because the U.S. itself doesn’t provide equal protection under the law.

Clearly the current crop of SCOTUS ne’er-do-wells were just looking for legal-schmegal language cover for what they wanted to do for their religiously inspired agendas.

The Republicans orchestrated this. The only solution is to vote them out, vote them all out.

    • Fancy meeting you here. What I understand is that by voiding Roe vs. Wade the Supreme Court has turned back abortion into the hands of each state. So Republican states can now forbid abortion, make it a crime, etc. In most states of Mexico and all most Latin American countries, a woman can be prosecuted for miscarriage… Grrr.

          • New abortion clinics [in Illinois] also recently opened near state boundary lines, in anticipation of the end of Roe v. Wade. Planned Parenthood opened a clinic opened in Waukegan near Wisconsin in 2020 and a clinic in Flossmoor near the Indiana border in 2018. Another clinic opened near the Missouri border in Fairview Heights in 2019, part of Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri.

          • Roe v Wade: The world reacts to US abortion ruling…BBC
            A passionate response across Ireland
By Emma Vardy, BBC Ireland correspondent
Across the island of Ireland news of the US Supreme Court ruling has triggered a swift and passionate response. The issue stirs deep emotions here where abortion was only relatively recently decriminalised. Many vocal Irish campaign groups and activists still exist on both sides.
“The world continues to watch America become unrecognisable,” wrote Dr Jennifer Cassidy on Twitter, a university lecturer who was in Dublin in 2018 when jubilant crowds celebrated as the Republic of Ireland voted to decriminalise abortion.
Many on the pro-choice side have been reliving memories of that day, now expressing their horror at what they are witnessing in the US.
The story of Savita Halappanavar, who died of sepsis in Ireland in 2012, because she was not allowed a termination, is now being reshared widely in Ireland, by people warning Americans to prepare themselves for many similar deaths.

  8. The Republicans don’t really care about life since they are pro-gun, pro-capital punishment, anti-healthcare, anti-WIC, anti-environment, and anti-social safety net. When these unplanned children are born, their welfare is no longer a concern, and as one Republican shouted during a healthcare debate, “let ’em die.” Republican actions demonstrate a desire to control women and they imply that women lack the mental and emotional capacity to control their own bodies and make family planning choices. Women, men, and children will be thrust into poverty. Fifteen-year-old boys will be paying child-support. Young women will have to give up on educational goals and careers. Poor women will be encouraged to surrender their children, in essence becoming breeders for those who wish to adopt. The list goes on and on. If the US really wishes to end unwanted pregnancies and abortions, I recommend that every fourteen-year-old boy receive a vasectomy which can be reversed when he’s ready to start a family. But since he isn’t female, his right to control his body is protected by the Constitution.

  12. Here is the letter that I sent to Governor Holcomb [R-IN].

Governor Holcomb quote: “The Supreme Court’s decision is clear, and it is now up to the states to address this important issue. We’ll do that in short order in Indiana. I’ve already called the General Assembly back on July 6, and I expect members to take up this matter as well.

I have been clear in stating I am pro-life. We have an opportunity to make progress in protecting the sanctity of life, and that’s exactly what we will do.”
    ………………………………………………………………………………………
“Protecting the sanctity of life” sounds so admirable. It means this: DO EVERYTHING TO GET THE FETUS BORN. After being born, reality sets in. The reality is that many women simply cannot afford to have another child. How much money is Indiana going to give to EACH woman so that she can raise a child properly? Many women have to quit their jobs to stay home to take care of an unwanted baby. This money for child support from the state must continue until the child is 18 years old.

Republicans are continuously against any meaningful gun control. A child, after it is born, is free to be killed by guns. Nothing is ever done. Remember the number of children killed while in school by automatic rifles? Indiana doesn’t care about children being killed by guns or meaningful gun control laws would be passed.

How many children are free to continuously worry about getting enough food to eat? How many will die because their parents can’t afford food AND healthcare? What is Indiana doing to give the homeless decent places to live? Nothing.

How many children go to school in buildings that need repair and the class sizes are huge because Indiana refuses to fund PUBLIC school education adequately ? There is a severe shortage of teachers. What is Indiana doing to ensure that ALL children get a good education? Nothing.

As I said before. Republicans care about the ‘sanctity of life’ ONLY until the fetus is born. After that, it is free to die and get a rotten education. Living children don’t matter.

  13. The U.S. needs to abolish sex offenders from being on the Supreme Court. That’s my opinion.
    …………………………………………
Thomas calls for overturning precedents on contraceptives, LGBTQ rights

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas on Friday called for overturning the constitutional rights the court had affirmed for access to contraceptives and LGBTQ rights in an opinion concurring with the majority to decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
In his separate opinion, Thomas acknowledged that Friday’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization does not directly affect any rights besides abortion. But he argued that the constitution’s Due Process Clause does not secure a right to an abortion or any other substantive rights, and he urged the court to apply that reasoning to other landmark cases.
Thomas wrote, “In future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell.”
Since Justice Samuel Alito’s draft majority opinion overturning Roe was leaked earlier this year, Democrats and liberal activists have warned that the conservative majority would soon turn its attention to other rights that the court has affirmed.
The three cases Thomas mentioned are all landmark decisions establishing certain constitutional rights.

  14. Amen! Love this! This ruling is nothing but religious persecution of those who do not hold the belief that a fertilized egg is a person. The same kind of crazy that holds a corporation is a person. This decision by at least 3 justices that took a bribe from Trump to be selected to be a Supreme Court Justice – remember Trump said he would only appoint justices that WOULD Overturn Roe!! These justices accepted a bribe to be appointed on the court – You overturn Roe and I will appoint you to the court.
Thomas is a corrupt justice who wouldn’t recuse himself from an extreme conflict of interest with his wife’s involvement in Jan 6th attack on the Capitol. The six justices in the majority who overturned Roe are intent on turning America into the Christian Nation that hey want and that is prohibited by the 1st amendment’s Establishment clause. There is only one solution to all of the crazy issues, beliefs and obstruction by the GOP – Vote every Republican out of any elected office in the country – you are spot on with this issue!!

The New World Order has been in the making for 150+ years. They’re drunk with success. They need to be treated like 2 year olds and told No! 16. SCRIPTURAL TRUTHS
Ten biblical episodes and prophecies provide an unequivocal expression of God’s attitude toward human life, especially the ontological status of “unborn children” and their pregnant mothers-to-be. Brief summaries:

    • A pregnant woman who is injured and aborts the fetus warrants financial compensation only (to her husband), suggesting that the fetus is property, not a person (Exodus 21:22-25).

    • The gruesome priestly purity test to which a wife accused of adultery must submit will cause her to abort the fetus if she is guilty, indicating that the fetus does not possess a right to life (Numbers 5:11-31).

    • God enumerated his punishments for disobedience, including “cursed shall be the fruit of your womb” and “you will eat the fruit of your womb,” directly contradicting sanctity-of-life claims (Deuteronomy 28:18,53).

    • Elisha’s prophecy for soon-to-be King Hazael said he would attack the Israelites, burn their cities, crush the heads of their babies and rip open their pregnant women (2 Kings 8:12).

    • King Menahem of Israel destroyed Tiphsah (also called Tappuah) and the surrounding towns, killing all residents and ripping open pregnant women with the sword (2 Kings 15:16).

    • Isaiah prophesied doom for Babylon, including the murder of unborn children: “They will have no pity on the fruit of the womb” (Isaiah 13:18).

    • For worshiping idols, God declared that not one of his people would live, not a man, woman or child (not even babies in arms), again confuting assertions about the sanctity of life (Jeremiah 44:7-8).

    • God will punish the Israelites by destroying their unborn children, who will die at birth, or perish in the womb, or never even be conceived (Hosea 9:10-16).

    • For rebelling against God, Samaria’s people will be killed, their babies will be dashed to death against the ground, and their pregnant women will be ripped open with a sword (Hosea 13:16).

    • Jesus did not express any special concern for unborn children during the anticipated end times: “Woe to pregnant women and those who are nursing” (Matthew 24:19).

  17. Ruth Bader-Ginsberg herself stated that Roe v. wade was probably unconstitutional and expected it to be overturned at some point. She was not a conservative nor a Republican. No, the Republicans did not orchestrate this. The U.S. Supreme Court did its job by overturning an unconstitutional and poorly written decision. The U.S. Supreme Court DID NOT outlaw abortion. All it did was uphold our democracy and the U.S. Constitution by sending it back to the states and to THE PEOPLE. Instead of reacting emotionally, liberals need to use their heads and STOP THE VIOLENCE, STOP THE THREATS, and STOP SPREADING DISINFORMATION. I am completely disgusted by the Democratic Party’s calls to riot in the streets, threaten Supreme Court justices, and threats to pack the courts. The majority of Americans hate violence and chaos, and this behavior does not help the Democrats’ cause.

      ………..
Women Declare Themselves Corporations to Force Supreme Court to Grant Them Rights as People…The Borowitz Report

      By Andy Borowitz
      June 27, 2022
WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Millions of American women and girls have declared themselves corporations in order to force the United States Supreme Court to grant them rights as people, legal observers have reported.

Attorneys across the nation indicated that they have been swamped by requests from clients seeking to incorporate as soon as possible.

“The Supreme Court decided in 2010 that corporations are people, so all we want is to be treated like corporations, ” Carol Foyler, who now goes by the corporate name FoylerCo L.L.C., said.

The decision by millions of women to incorporate sent shock waves through the Court’s conservative majority, who reportedly scoured the Constitution in vain for a means to circumvent the ingenious tactic.

Even the normally taciturn Clarence Thomas was moved to issue a rare public statement. “It’s a sad day in America when the nation’s highest court is forced to treat women like people,” he wrote.

  18. Majority Of Americans Support Abortion, Poll Finds — But Not Later In The Pregnancy Alison DurkeeJun 25, 2021,09:49am EDTForbes Staff
    TOPLINE
A majority of Americans broadly believe abortion should be legal and more than 60% believe people should be able to obtain abortions during the first trimester of their pregnancy, a new Associated Press/NORC poll finds—but support for abortion being legal drops significantly as the pregnancy continues, an issue that will soon be taken up by the U.S. Supreme Court.
    KEY FACTS

The poll, conducted June 10-14 among 1,125 U.S. adults, found 57% of respondents believe abortion should be legal overall in all or most cases—with 23% saying it should be legal in all cases and 33% saying only in most cases—including 76% of Democrats and 36% of Republicans.
That percentage was even higher when asked whether abortion should be legal during the first trimester specifically, with 61% saying it should be legal in all or most cases.
Only 34% believe abortion should be legal in all or most cases in the second trimester, however, and 19% say it should be legal during the third, including 52% and 28% of Democrats, respectively, and 18% and 8% of Republicans.
further 30% believe that abortion should be illegal in some but not all cases in the second trimester, and 26% believe it should be illegal but with exceptions in the third trimester.
A separate Reuters poll conducted June 11-17 recorded slightly higher levels of support, with 47% of respondents saying pre-viability abortions should be legal, which would be up until about 24 to 28 weeks into the pregnancy, or the end of the second trimester.
Under current federal rules set by the Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade, abortion is legal up until the point where the fetus is considered to be viable.

    BIG NUMBER

49%. That’s the percentage of respondents in the AP poll who said they believe anyone should be able to legally obtain an abortion if they “[want] one for any reason,” while 50% believe that should not be the case.

    CHIEF CRITIC

Reproductive health expert and abortion rights advocate Dr. Daniel Grossman of the University of California, San Francisco, told the AP that past research has shown Americans are more likely to be empathetic to second-trimester abortions if they learn about the reasoning behind them, like people being unable to make arrangements to get an abortion in time during the first trimester or discovering that the fetus is at risk of death or severe abnormalities. “More work needs to be done to elevate the voices of people who have had abortions and who want to share their stories to help people understand the many reasons why this medical care is so necessary,” Grossman told the AP.

    KEY BACKGROUND

The AP’s finding that a majority of Americans support some form of abortion being legal is in line with other polling showing increasing levels of support for abortion rights. A recent Gallup poll found 47% of Americans now believe abortion is “morally acceptable,” which marked a record high, and 58% of Americans do not want Roe v. Wade to be overturned. While majorities of the AP respondents believed later-term abortions should be outlawed at least in most cases, there is more support for them than in the past: A Gallup poll in 2018, for instance, found only 28% believed abortion should be legal in the second trimester and 13% in the third, lower than the AP’s findings now.
