On July 30th, 1956 we dropped the unofficial motto of the United States, E Pluribus Unum (translation “from many, one”) and adopted the motto, In God We Trust.
How has that been working out, do you think?
Well, a recent Gallup poll showed that 81% of U.S. adults say they believe in God, down six points from 2017 and the lowest percentage since the poll first asked the question in 1944.
On the unity front, we seem to be hearing many comments that the nation is more divided now than at any time since the Civil War period (1860-1865).
Gosh, do you think the changing of the motto caused all of this?
I don’t know that changing the motto made any difference … but 81% believe in God?? That in itself is worrisome … drop in points or not!

When you unpack that “god” many are just theists who believe in a “higher power” what ever that is. (I know, I know teacher! Wishful thinking!)
I have mentioned before that it seems as if every Christian has created their own god. Well, this seems to be non-Christians, too.

That’s funny, because even when I was in school (1965-1978), I was taught that the motto was “E Pluribus Unum”. “In God We Trust” was just written on the money. Which is against the First Amendment BTW.

The new “motto” to replace the de facto motto (never officially adopted) was Eisenhauer’s idea . . . to fight godless communism. And you are quite correct that it violates the first amendment to the Constitution which most people interpret as “. . . a guarantee of freedom concerning religion, expression, assembly, and the right to petition. It forbids Congress from both promoting one religion over others and also restricting an individual’s religious practices.”

In today’s world, the “Amendments” are simply words to be interpreted as one wishes. The fact that they are actually part of this country’s modus operandi has become a moot point

I am beginning to wonder what these people are worshipping. It seems that evidence isn’t involved, just “feelings in their hearts.” (I wonder what a heart attack is by way os such messages.) So, they are worshipping “gut feelings” but they haven’t the emotional IQ to figure out whether they have a political savant in the form of Donald Trump or gastric distress.
