Capitalism or Socialism?—Show Us

Filed under: Uncategorized — Steve Ruis @ 10:12 am

“A recent Fox News poll showed that more Democrats favor socialism over capitalism, in a sharp reversal from just a year and a half ago. The poll, taken between Aug. 7-10, showed that 59% of registered Democratic voters who participated had a positive view of socialism, compared to just 49% who felt that way about capitalism. In February 2020, when the question was last asked, 50% of Democrats who participated said they had a favorable view of capitalism, with just 40% saying the same about socialism.” (Source http://www.defendemocracy.press)

I am sure that a lot of conservative news commenters will be wringing their hands over this, along the lines of “Don’t they know socialism is bad?”

Actually I do not think those polled have any idea what “socialism” might be in this country, but one thing they do know: capitalism is not working for them. We were told “work hard, keep your head down, and your children’s lives will be better than yours.” Does anyone believe this tripe any more? People have worked harder and harder and only gotten further behind. If it didn’t have such a bad reputation the current crop of rich, greedy bastards would reintroduce the “company store.”

Over the past half century, the rich have captured the reins of government and have been running it to make themselves vastly richer, and well, the rest of us can go fuck ourselves. It is every man for himself, right?

It will no longer be that unless the current crop of greedy rich bastards show that capitalism can work for all of us. And they had better be damned quick about it. The ship is sinking and rearranging the deck chairs isn’t going to work anymore.

  1. You’re right, of course, most people don’t know that socialism (or even capitalism and communism or even fascism) really are.

I had an economics professor many years ago who claimed, with considerable justification, that all of these systems eventually devolve into a situation where a handful of wealthy individuals end up controlling the system for their own personal benefit. And from what I’ve learned about history, he was more or less right.

At least until we reach the point where the system becomes so unfair that enough people become angry enough to spark an actual revolution and overthrow the system. They then establish their own system, which once again becomes infected by human greed and the lust for power, and the whole cycle starts all over again

    • So, now that we know it, don’t you think we would come up with some workable constraints upon greed?

      Wait a minute . . .

Maybe those restraints were developed but the wealthy bought the patents and locked them away in a safe. (You and I are both old enough to remember the claims that General Motors bought the patent on a carburetor that would allow cars to run on water (or get 100 mpg or … or …) and locked it way in a safe.)

      • Then the constraints weren’t sufficiently developed 🙂 Just consider how the ancien-regime was abolished only to be substituted by the noblesse d’empire. Then that was also abolished, and was substituted by an aristocracy of going to the right schools and vacationing in the right spots.

        • It is likely that no governmental structure is powerful enough to resist the concerted efforts of very rich assholes. The price of liberty, it is said here, is eternal vigilance. Unfortunately you have to smart enough to know what to look out for … and we aren’t.

  2. The Obamas and Oprah, as examples, are what Democrats believe socialism to be, want it to be. Since leaving office the Obamas have acquired two properties, one, in D.C. and the other on Martha’s Vineyard, with a combined value of over $20 million. These in addition to their Chicago shanty. Oprah is a titan of obscene wealth that rivals thevbad (republican) uber rich. What they all have in common is their cartoonish Gatsbyesque party til hell freezes over personas, as the seas rise to swallow them whole like modern Jonahs. Democrat lovers of a charity based socialism who want others, and themselves, to have all of this privilege, while touting commitments to climate change, liberal social causes, and counterfeit justice.

As an old history prof once told me … only one thing worse than an American conservative … an American liberal.

  3. Many of us DO know what socialism, communism & fascism is & we don’t think socialism is bad, because we know that the so-called “bad” socialism is a creation of American propaganda. We also know that American strength was built on a healthy mixture of socialism & capitalism – THE NEW DEAL. This has been almost totally dismantled since the Reagan years & now we have nothing but a predatory capitalism.

Talking to us … about us … like we’re economic &/or political dumbasses doesn’t do anything to endear us to the capitalist cause. We know who the enemy is.
