It Is Easy to Be Confused

I read two blog posts recently, one that stated that none of the vaccinated (in the US) are dying from COVID-19 and the other (from the UK) that only the vaccinated are dying from COVID-19. Actually, both are true.

In the US, the unvaccinated are many, just under half of the population. In the UK, the percent vaccinated is approaching two thirds.

The vaccines are reported to be in the mid-90’s% in preventive effectiveness, which is not 100%, so the vaccinated will still be getting sick, but the vaccines also prevent more severe symptoms, so the vaccinated getting the disease will be dying at a lower rate.

Consider a hypothetical region that is 100% vaccinated. What is the death rate of the unvaccinated? It is zero, of course. The death rate of the vaccinated must be higher, by default, but what people don’t hear is that the death rate is much lower than it had been for the unvaccinated. So, the vaccinated dying at a higher rate than the unvaccinated is a logical consequence of a vaccination program.

I wish that headline writers would strive to be more accurate and more complete.

Otherwise you end up with people seeing “None of the Vaccinated are Dying” and “Only the Vaccinated are Dying” and those who are not detail oriented throw up their hands and claim that “you can’t trust the news media because everything changes at the drop of a hat. Or the ideologues choose which stories to “pass on” to others who are like-minded.

In writing this I realize that a great many of the “issues of the day” have been treated the same way, exacerbating our divisions.

Do you have any ideas as to how to fix this? (Obviously expecting more from the general population isn’t going to work as it hasn’t worked for forever.)

  1. Someone has to teach journalists how to be journalists. If you read or hear the news and you find it upsetting, it is one of two things. The truth can be upsetting, or, what you heard or read was designed to push your buttons to herd you towards a politcal goal.

It’s us or them folks. Reasonable people who can figure out what the hell is going on, and the deluded masses who love the lie. Those who promote fearmongering, and lies in general often use fallacious arguments to do so. If you know what that is, you can see through the B.S.

If you don’t know what that is, you are part of the problem.

How to fix it? I’ve said many times, make the media with a bad habit of lying or misleading the public pay! Fine them for their lies until they can only afford to speak the truth.

    • I like but wouldn’t the fining process become politicized?

      • Sneezing while facing N instead of S, can be politicized. They are going to politicize everything, and squeal like pigs every single time they are brought to court. But IMO if you can’t stop the lies, the BS, the blatant, intentional, riling up of the rubes, by using every ridiculous assertion on the internet, or all the right wing hog trough sludge (Faux News, and its immitators,) we aren’t going to have a country worth living in by 2030.

Free speech does not mean you can yell Fire! in a crowded theater, nor should it allow the kind of stuff I outlined, to stir up insurrections.

Lies intended to cause hostile takeovers should not be allowed under the free speech umbella. Fine their asses back into the stone age, and if they do not pay, pull their broadcasting approvals, and ban them from social media.

Probably not a popular opinion, but sooner or later somebody needs to put a foot down, and I’d prefer it to be before the R’s get away with taking power illegally, and not relinquishing it, until after the next civil war.

Of course, it’s possible I’m overreacting right? Which is exactly the game they are playing now.

They have lost all credibilty. We have seen what they have done, and we cannot unsee it. No matter how much they play it down, and lie about it. What they have become should be visible to anyone with 2 neurons to rub together.

Cut em off at the BS pipeline I say.

        • I agree. I stopped watching TV news years ago. If more of us were to do that, their revenue would dry up and they might be so desperate to ask us what we want.
