Christians Horrified

Many Christians seem horrified that atheists can spout their heresies freely through social media. Any number of conservative religions consider social media to be tools of the Devil for that and other reasons. (As evidence, the highest usage rates of hotel porn were in Salt Lake City and if that devil machine can do that to the Mormons, none of us is safe.)

Let’s break this down a bit, unpack it as it is said. Why is it that atheists like me can make atheistic claims and criticize religions openly on forums such as this? The most common answer is that our Constitution gives us freedom of speech. But it doesn’t give us freedom from reciprocity.

In my lifetime, an atheist who espoused her status openly would receive a heavy dose of public condemnation and vilification. I think back to Madalyn Murray O’Hair, who founded American Atheists when I was in high school. I heard terrible things about her character, exclusively from people who had never met her, nor spent any time in her presence.

And what happened to Mrs. O’Hair and her family? The NY Times reported in 2001 “Officials said they believed the three were killed and dismembered in an Austin storage locker and their bodies dumped at a remote ranch in Real County, 90 miles west of San Antonio. One of the men suspected of involvement in the case, David R. Waters, 53, accompanied the authorities to the grave site in January as part of a plea bargain.”

What Christians need to ask themselves is when threats, including death threats actually carried out, are removed and an ever larger group of people show up who say, simply, “I do not believe you,” you have to ask how good are your beliefs if they need such threats to support them?

Now HOLD ON a minute! Several of the Middle Eastern countries, especially those under Shia-laws or semi-Shia-laws, are very well known to have an overabundance of very horny, nasty, men!!!! Hmmmm, I’m thinking your statement Steve should be expanded much greater around the globe of religious followers and leaders! 😉 😛

    • Oh! Btw, my above comment was not to detract or distract from other “publicly portrayed” religions, ESPECIALLY in the U.S.!

In all my vast first-hand experience in churches, seminary, and surrounded daily by common and not-so-common Christians (Christologists) in the U.S. and in Texas, they’re freakin’ EVERYWHERE you turn, what they say and do publicly is frequently NOT the exact same thing privately. Guarantee it! How do we know this? That answer is easy…

The Christian Church and all Faith-followers to said church have mastered the art of justification since Yeshua was executed in 30-33 CE. Period. Truth. “Justification” of every single detail of the religion/faith, from the atomic level to the macro-level, everything is justified 100x over! 😄 Why do you think there are over 5,000 different denominations? Many say over 40,000! Hahahaha!

      • Such glee! The proclivity to make shit up by the “Church Fathers” and their ilk down through the ages is astonishing. Basically they are saying “Our scriptures are clear as mud and you can’t understand what they say without help.” The entire Protestant movement morphed from a “reform the Catholic Church” movement into a “we don’ need no stinking priests to tell us what’s in the Bible, we can read it ourselves” movement. But most protestant denominations have their own cadres of spin doctors and apologists doping the same old song and dance.

  2. The thing about Abrahamic religions is that they can’t just let people be…believe or not believe what they want and not fret over it. And if they believe their god will take care of those sinners, then for god’s sake, let him handle it.
But no…It must be some terrible fear they feel, that atheists might be right and an urgent need to disprove that fleeting thought and prove, instead, that they are the correct believers…they are the ones going to heaven etc. Simply ceasing to exist is a deep deep fear with them or they wouldn’t be so hateful and dangerous to others.

    • Mary, the bible (via Jesus/Paul) instructs them to go out and “win the lost.” They feel/believe it is their god-given duty … part of their salvation. They’ll most likely still make it into heaven even if they don’t win any “lost souls,” but hey … they’re hoping they’ll get an extra gold crown or two if they bring others “into the fold.” And you know the value of gold crowns, right?

    • Gosh, do you think the church leader’s egos are involved?! Do you think they think their god needs their help? Can you spell hubris boys and girls?

    • Then who are these people who are having conversations with Jesus? These are the people who claim “Jesus *died *for our sins,” so he is technically dead, no? People who are divorced don’t become single … they are categorized as divorced, so Jesus, having died is still “dead” even if “dead, resurrected” is his category. No?

  4. And the threat is usually the last straw of the theists argument…do you want to go to hell?

    • Without threats, what would be left of their “teachings.” It is interesting the church worshipping the “god of love” is based upon threats of extreme violence. ANd these people condemn video games because of the violence therein, but their own religion … s’okay, Jesus says so.

  5. Without the threats religion would simply fade away, and while many adults are idiots/willfully ignorant, kids aren’t stupid. Thus, the indoctrination of children is the bedrock of pretty much all religion.

  6. I am sure many x-ians miss the good old days when atheists could be “taken care of” and they could sleep in peace, knowing they have done the right thing.

    Such wonderful people x-ians.

…and if their god is so all knowing and all powerful, please explain why the gods need their help in dispensing justice?
