John Adams . . . Prophet?

Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide. It is in vain to say that democracy is less vain, less proud, less selfish, less ambitious, or less avaricious than aristocracy or monarchy. It is not true, in fact, and nowhere appears in history. Those passions are the same in all men, under all forms of simple government, and when unchecked, produce the same effects of fraud, violence, and cruelty.” (Emphasis mine. SR)
John Adams (1735 – 1826), who was one of the more conservative Founding Fathers, written in a letter to John Taylor dated December 17, 1814

Donald Trump

Vain . . . Check!

Proud . . . Check!

Selfish . . . Check!

Ambitious . . . Check!

Avaricious . . . Check!

Maybe the extremist evangelicals are correct, maybe these are the End Times, the end times for our democracy

  2. Independent IG’s and a shared belief in the Rule of Law are what our democracies ride upon. Nothing else. Trump has destroyed both.

    • I would consider them the guard rail of democracies. Trump has made it easier to drive right off the road … which is consistent with his deregulation efforts.

I can hardly wait for the “tell all books” five years from now that will detail Trump’s contributions to any of the “achievements” of his administration. So far, it seems that the vast majority of “his ideas” have gone nowhere, so what is getting done is old GOP fantasy lists of “things to do if we ever get the chance.”

        • What you don’t count the Executive Orders signed with a Sharpie (so people could see on television who had signed it)? I don’t recall a single other president holding up an EO to show his signature on it. What a fucking loon!

            • I may have to commit seppuku in protest if Trump wins re-election. The mere thought makes me nauseous, not that I am embracing Biden. It is anyone but Trump at this point.

John, the very sad truth, THE OBVIOUS RIGHTING of us trying to correct the ship BEFORE it sailed into this current hell-storm Typhoon we are in… was this!

Popular Vote: 65,853,514 American votes. IOW, 48.2% of Americans wanted Hillary Clinton. Period! Done! End of story. But…

That is no longer how are democracy of the People, by the People, for the People works anymore. Today our democracy is dictated by millions and billions of dollars in many legal and/or subterfuge methods. Period. 😔

              • And the candidates don’t get anywhere near a serious ballot without being vetted by the plutocrats.

  3. Hahaha! You nailed it here Steve! Many times I have been reminded of present times, present federal leadership in light of what John Adams foresaw and knew well the darker sides of all human nature; even American’s not so virtuous natures.
