Jail Birds Fly Free … Well Some Do

One of the parents who conspired to get their kid into an elite college the old fashioned way (cheating, bribery, influence, etc.) has been on trial and that trial is in the sentencing phase. The prosecution wants something a little less than a year in prison and the defense wants something closer to a month in prison.

So, this is the justice system we have. People go to jail for cheating on college admissions requirements, for possession of small amounts of marijuana, etc. but if you do something really big, like bring down the financial system of the U.S. and the world, or defy the orders of a federal judge, you get swept under the rug as being “too big to fail” or, gosh, you get a presidential pardon. I understand that some banks might be too big to fail but are they too big to be broken up and sold off? Are the executives too big to go to jail? Do we need bigger jail cells? We used to send bankers to jail and did so as recently as the savings and loan debacle in the 1980’s. But now, gosh, it would be just so sad to do that, so let’s just give those executives a bonus and let them retire or, heck, just let them keep doing what they have been doing.

Obviously justice in this country has always been predicated upon the color of your skin and your socioeconomic status. If Bernie Maddoff had bilked a bunch of poor people or a bunch of people of color, would he have gone to jail? He had the bad taste to bilk white people who had been rich, so his fate was sealed.

This is sad.

  1. Obama gave a number of these crooks jobs running the treasury in his government with a complete pass from the Dems who now, quite sanctimoniously, want to draw and quarter Trump on moral grounds. Aaaah, such a lovely club, the bankrupt members of the 1 percent.

    • Absolutely. Both political parties have sold out to the monied class. If one of these parties doesn’t reform itself to serve people instead of money, we will be needing one or two new parties.

      • The DNC’s new neoliberal stooge, mayor from Indiana, now comparing Bernie supporters to Trump Trump supporters, and shock of shocks, attracting a lot of big Obama financial backers. Clintonian DNC targeting Bernie again.

        • The puppeteers with the money will continue to do this until we take away their toys and make them behave in a civilized fashion.

  2. Zach,
In our do so distant past, there was a saying here in ‘Merikkka. It went like this, there is not a dimes’ worth of difference between the donkey gang and the elephant gang. Well, that was then and since Billy Bob Bubba occupied the White House for eight years, maybe even before that time, I have decided that old saying is way out of date. I see the two of them as the opposite sides of the very same coin. The Clintstone crime family, with their new DLC, gave us a donkey gang that only remembered the working class, unions, and the poor folks at election time. Both wings of the war party (donkey and elephant) are sooo deep into the pockets of the very rich that even with a score card it is bloody hard to tell which is donkey and which is elephant.

    • Yep … and makes the current Dem keystone cop routine of clean up government by impeaching Trump more ridiculous by the second …

      • You totally missed Walter’s point. Obviously you’re so entrenched in your side of the political spectrum that you’re unable to see the fallacies of arguing against one side or the other.

  3. Looks like I should have said this in my last comment here. OK? All set then? Here it goes. We do NOT have two (2) major political parties in ‘Merikkka now days, haven’t for some years actually.
As the donkey gang is as deep inside the pockets of Wally Street and the big international banksters as the elephant gang has been for a long time, all we have are two (2) wings of the War Party.
The drone king (aka; the igNobel piece prizident) had weekly meetings to decide who to kill for that week. Gobomber was worse than Cheney/Shrub. Both wings of the war party love war, because they and their kids don’t do the fighting/dying. They all leave that to the shrinking working class and poor kids.
Thanks to Nan for making me aware that I messed up by not giving enough detail previously.

    • Once again, you are spot on. I very much liked Obama’s style but his policies …uh, well, … did I mention Arnie Duncan?
