I suspect you won’t be shocked it means something quite different to the “morbidly rich.”

This is very much worth reading.

What Republicans and Billionaires Really Mean When They Talk About ‘Freedom’

  1. Good article. My platform for my republican run for the senate in 2020 is this: “Freedom is a gas chamber and a crematorium on every block so we can eliminate poor, disabled, and liberal minded individuals thus freeing the country for true Americans, rich, white republicans.” I think my chances of winning are very, very good.

    • At least in the primaries. Then it depends on how many evangelicals you can get to vote on election day.

      • Jesus is the one who commands me to run for the senate on this platform. It’s got Christianity written all over it, does it not? 🙂

  2. Free from taxation and regulation. Sounds like the old me where it was a god given right to exploit (for the benefit of the race, of course)

    • Our government used to have as a major goal “to promote the general welfare” but Republicans are dead set against welfare, so …

      • That is done by bootstrapping. Sad part is not everyone wants the high roller lifestyle. Play or be dammed. No room for those that want a quiet life

  5. I guess we should remind the Republicans and billionaires what they love to remind us: “Freedom isn’t free”.

    • Freedom to die young for lack of health care, freedom to starve, freedom to have your labor coerced. What a country!

      • I meant it in a way, you want freedom, you have to pay taxes for it.

  6. Well, actually, before we had “civilization” we were free with no taxes (or rent, or employers, or …). The taxes pay for our collective safety, as it were.

The tax rate in the US is not that much lower, if at all, than in other places in which ordinary citizens receive far more benefits. So, we are paying the taxes and not getting the benefits of citizenship others get in other countries. Hmm, I wonder who is getting the benefits? Possibly those who have deflected taxation from them onto the middle class? (Or maybe Satan? Shut up, Church Lady!)
