Ask Yourself “If They Really Believed …”

More than 300 Catholic priests across Pennsylvania sexually abused children over seven decades, protected by a hierarchy of church leaders who covered it up, according to a sweeping grand jury report released Tuesday. Since Pennsylvania has about 4% of the nation’s population, we can expect that the numbers of victims and perpetrators for the country as a whole are 25 times worse. One of the editorial responses to this abysmal situation was this:

Now, ask yourself: if those Catholic priests and other clerics really, truly believed, as Christians claim to believe their religion (down to the bone, etc.), that they were destined to everlasting Hellfire, that they would have done what they did? This is surely evidence that they did not so believe, that they would not be subject to everlasting torment because of their actions.

Either the Catholic Church is selling absolutions, in which case God’s judgment is not really God’s judgment, or a major segment of the Catholic clergy in the U.S. (and presumably worldwide) doesn’t believe in the fairy tales they tell about the “afterlife” to control the behaviors of their “flocks.”

I also wouldn’t put it past the Catholic hierarchy to double down by claiming that God will punish the miscreants (so they do not have to). Maybe they were waiting for capital punishment to be banned before coughing up the criminal clergy … naw.

The Catholic Con is slowly unraveling. I pray that that process is accelerating.

  2. How many of the commandments, the structure of religion, grace by faith, and deferred responsibility for ones actions has stopped “sin”or crimes from happening? Of course they don’t believe it, but they believe in it.

  3. Ah, but the priests knew that they could confess their “sin” to another priest, say a few “Hail Marys” and they’d be absolved and just hunky-dory with god again. Every time. And they knew their confessor would never rat them out, because they were probably doing the same thing. All that “forgiveness from god” is such a con job, it not only let these guys get away with child abuse for years and years, it also gave them enough deniability for them to be able to sleep at night.

  8. This has been an ongoing thing with every religion once the priest class got to the point where they didn’t have to do any real work.
One could almost be driven to say as an old time pope supposedly said when his army was laying siege to some town way back when. His leading general asked said pope about what members of the town they should kill. The pope supposedly said; “Kill them all. God will know his own”. While I do not support capital punishment, I’d enjoy seeing EVERY child molester locked behind nice sturdy steel bars for life, however short his/her fellow inmates may make it.

  10. LOL on the number 2 comment. That gang must have so many number 2’s around. Or, maybe they pick them, like the draft we had during the Vietnam fiasco. I remember an old Art Buchwald article from the mid 1970’s. I suppose it was after Watergate. His article was about since that event, few wanted to join in with a gummint position that we’d have to draft people into those jobs. It was very funny, he even had protesters chanting “Hell no, we won’t go” about having to take a gummint job.
Funny how odd things like that long ago article stick with me. Then again, maybe it’s just my own oddball character.
No worries, I don’t brag. I do good work, well, I did. Never got fired from any job I ever had and I can still take some good photos. I knew too many folks, kids and adults, who did brag on about themselves when I was young. Sorry, but Dad was right. They just talked the talk, but could never walk the walk. Me? I can walk and chew gum at the same time, not bragging, just stating a fact. Oh, and yeah, I DO talk too much. As this long comment proves.

  11. Not all church goers truly believe, and catholics at times does things that are against God’s laws, for one praying to statues, (idols). My thoughts are some of them choose to do as they please either they believe in everlasting torment or not.

Adam and eve knew what would happen to them, yet they still chose to disobey God.

    • I don’t consider ordained priests and bishops to be just “church goers.” And did Adam and Eve know what would happen to them? They were told they would die … and they didn’t (they were not immortal, not ere they ever immortal because they were forbidden from eating from the Tree of Life also). So, either Yahweh lied or was not at all believable. Plus, what honest god would allow his new creations to be influenced by a talking serpent when they did not know the difference between good and evil?

  12. Adam and Eve knew if they disobeyed they’d die, just like us when we choose to do something despite the consequences. ( lie, curse, disobey, steal )

They didn’t die, simply because of the Love God has for us, instead of killing them he killed the animals and coverd their shame, not because God is a liar but simply because He loves us and decided to give them/us a second chance .
And He allowed them to be tempted by the serpent to test His new creation’s faithfulness towards him just like parents would test their kids to see if they’d obey them or not.

I mean it’s obvious that He tests us humans, even His once favorite angel(lucifer) betrayed Him and tried to take over Him in heaven, so it’s only logical that He tests His creatures ( us humans ) and our faithfulness towards Him. Even us humans acts the sameway, after being betrayed by someone we test other people in our life ex: (relationship, family, friends, work etc)…

    • So, you test the newborn? Test their loyalty? Why would they be loyal? What had Yahweh done to earn that loyalty? You teach children, you do not test them.

In addition Yahweh threatened to kill all kinds of people and then went ahead and killed them. The body count in the Bible is at least two and a half million people, not counting the 99+% of humanity killed int eh Great Flood. If a god says he will do something, should you not believe him?

God is not love. There is nothing in scripture to claim that. He may exhibit something akin to love at times but he also exhibits hate, disdain, fury, petulance, revenge (lots of that) and other negative things. The “God is love” trope was made up by latter day Christians and sold as a bill of goods to one and all.

And He allowed them to be tempted by the serpent — You truly believe in a talking serpent? And no, it was NOT Satan … look up the meaning of the Hebrew word if you don’t believe me.

even His once favorite angel(lucifer) betrayed Him — Are you aware that “Lucifer” means bright and morning star and has also been used to describe Jesus?

    • Often the reasons were stated. He order the Israelites to complete destroy a town, included all of the men women and children, for the way the people of that town treated the Israelites when they left for Egypt. None of the people in that town had been born at that time and none of the people alive at that time were still alive when the massacre occurred. That is taken vengeance on a group of people who had done the Israelis no harm whatsoever.

  14. GOD is LOVE

    1john 4:16
We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love.
God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them.

    Daniel 9:4
4 I prayed to the LORD my God and confessed: “Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments.

    John 3:16
For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

    • The Gospel of John was written roughly 80 years after the claimed death of Jesus by someone who did not know him. All of the other gospels were written earlier, yet John contradicts the synoptic gospels right and left. Whoever wrote John had an axe to grind and it was any who did not consider Jesus to be god. many thought him a prophet. Many thought him a son of God. The writer of John was writing to make the case that Jesus was God, a claim never laid at the feet of Jesus anywhere else in scripture. The quote from Daniel does not make the claim that “God is love” it simply states that God returns love if it is directed at him first.

If your god is love, why did he order the Israelites to exterminate all of the rightful inhabitants of Canaan? Is this how an all-powerful god acts. Alternatively, Yahweh could have transported all of the Canaanites to fertile unoccupied land in China to create new lives for themselves, so the Israelis could peacefully occupy the land they were promised. Or Yahweh could have just put them all to sleep for ten years only to wake up to the fact that they have new landlords. Or … or .. there are many, many alternatives to genocidal war, but that was #1 on Yahweh’s list.

If Yahweh is love, why did he adopt an obscure tribe of Near Eastern semi-nomads and not the whole world’s population? Why did he wait so many thousands of years before sharing his message of salvation, thus condemning millions of people to Hell for simple ignorance? Why did he not proclaim his message from on high through angels, flying in majesty, blowing trumpets, and announcing his new covenant to one an all? Why not engrave his message in stone all over the planet in all languages so none could be ignorant?

Why did all of his creations rebel against him? The first humans did. A goodly portion of his angels did; heck they made war in Heaven! Why was he so wrong in his creating? Why did he create a universe 99.999999+% of which is absolutely impossible to live in (either the vacuum of space or the furnace of stars) only to have your people claim the universe was created to support life?

Jesus came to bring the sword … if that quote can be trusted. He also claimed, in Matthew, that none of the Law of the Jews was to be put aside. Why do Christians do neither of these things, if they are as they say, followers of Jesus?

      • He did choose and send people to share his commandment, his words to people but did they listen?

Most of them chose not to listen, some simply didn’t believe, others rather live in sin(to have fun) and a portion of them did listen.

When moses tried to speak to Pharoah did he listen? Despite all the signs?

When Jesus shared the good news and performed so many miracles at the end did everyone follow? Up till today people are not believing and not following 🤷🏾‍♀️

When God gave his commandments to his people through Moses on the two stone tablets didn’t most of them still disobey? Still turn their backs against him

We ask our self why didn’t God do this and why didn’t he do that, and why did he take sooo long to speak to us so we could know the truth and change and be good and turn from doing the things that glorify his name so we can prevent ourselves from eternal torment?!?

but guess what, when he do send us his people to warn us, or teach and tell us his commandments and truth and word and show us proof by performing miracles and soo much more things we still disobey, turn our backs, do as we please we still don’t believe we still we still we still.

He sent his son yet humans still denied him and his teachings and warnings
Just like today, some believe and try to follow.

But others simply choose not to follow because they rather stay in sin saying they want to enjoy theirselves, or because they Don’t want to believe or for many other reasons

. And in the future children and adults will ask why why why didn’t God warn us but he did and still is, but we keep choosing to Deny the truth and do as we please despite knowing and being told.

He sent Jesus yet not much followed and today many doesn’t believe

Even if he would send angels and blow trumpets even speak to us himself, and leave us for 10 years giving us once again a chance it will still have some of us that would not follow, not obey, choose to do as we please

And 10 years after that, the new generation would ask why didn’t God warn us, why didn’t he leave an angel to remind us each time we’re on the verge of turning against God or to warn the children to come, about him and his laws? Why why why?

        • Hello? “When moses tried to speak to Pharaoh did he listen? Despite all the signs?” Did not Yahweh “harden” the Pharaoh’s heart, so he could not agree with Moses’ request? You can’t blame the Egyptians for rejecting Moses’s request when it was Yahweh who prevented them from hearing it.

          • Pharoah heart was already hard anyways
What is Yahweh who made the first Pharoah killed all the baby boys? I don’t think so and it’s theough that act i addition of the previous that Yahweh decided it was time to free his children.

You know we can stay here months and months going about how and what God did that proves He is not good.

But i know that God is a good God and he is not all evil like you think. And i kniw that based on my life i know how i was and het He still loves me and proves it every single day in my life.

I don’t know what went on in your life for you to think the I AM is evil i don’t know your story but perhaps you should give God a chance to show you who He really is.
I know i did because i was once like you thinking He was wicked and didn’t love me.
but guess what He isn’t all evil like the enemy wants us to believe, but hey you have to live it to believe it.
So i pray that you take the decision to allow Him to prove himself to you. God loves you and I JESUS LOVES US.

I believe in GOD the I AM and through my own personal life and story past to futur I have the firm insurance that JESUS LOVES ME. All he asks is that we obey his laws.

Just like if the president pits a new law we have to abide by it if not we are to be punished.

He gave the angels right to choose on their own some left and some stayed by his side till this day

He gave us humans right to choose
And some try to obey him and choose to live as they please.
