Why Can’t Atheists Just Shut Up About It?

There is a pervasive feeling among many Americans that there is a war being made upon Christianity, when in actuality Christians are part of a class of people called theists, people who believe in the existence of a god or gods so that includes Christians, who are making class war against those who do not so believe, atheists. This has been going on since there have been religions so it is nothing new. For example:

  • Plato, in his construction of the ideal state, made “impiety” a crime punishable by five years imprisonment for the first offense and death upon a second conviction.
  • Jesus, who is offered as the fount of love and compassion, threatened nonbelievers claiming they will be thrown “into the furnace of fire” where “men will weep and gnash their teeth,” just as “the weeds are gathered and burned with fire….” (Matthew 13: 40– 42).
  • Thomas Aquinas, the great medieval theologian, taught that “the sin of unbelief is greater than any sin that occurs in the perversion of morals,” and he recommended that the heretic “be exterminated from the world by death” after the third offense.
  • Our political waters have been so poisoned against atheists that in 1958 a mere 18% of Americans could abide the idea of an atheist president. (Recently that number has climbed to 58%, possibly due to atheists speaking out?)

So, those thinking that atheists should be silent are saying that we should suffer their iniquities in silence. But, by not being silenced, we are fighting back, and as the poll result above shows, making progress. We should have learned to fight long ago but it is hard to think when you are being burned at a stake.

  1. I look forward to the Day where we don’t have to have these conversations. But alas, we must go forward and let it be known the truth. That life without religion is a peaceful opportunity to end divisiveness and hate. To include everyone fairly, and stop the warmongering. Since the earliest recollections of monotheism we have had nothing but bloodshed and hate. It’s time to try another way. Hey what do they have to lose anyway? If it all goes to hell Jesus will come and pluck them up anyway.

  3. I’m afraid, Steve, that Christianity is nothing as compared to Islam. If religion is disease, Islam is the plague.

What is the worst insult you can render against someone who strives to be prominent in the world? YOU ARE IRRELEVANT and we will ignore you and everything you say.

Religions proselytize — it’s built in. Ignore them and like the foul cur that gets no hand outs, they will eventually die.

    • Yep. Judaism is a political religion. Christianity is a proselytizing religion, and Islam is a politically proselytizing religion. Danger is on the horizon.

    • If you synchronize the starting dates of Islam and Christianity, they are on similar tracks. So, there is some hope that Islam will settle down into something like the same state as modern Christianity. The unfortunate part of the difference in their “arcs” in that Islam is in the state it is in during a time in which nuclear weapons exist (think about Christian Europe in the 1400s for comparisons including the religious wars to come between protestants and catholics).

  4. Religion needs someone to hate. They do it well.

People tend to be united when they have a common enemy. That unity by hate is fostered every Wed and Sun in every church everywhere.

They hate the atheist, the gays, the Democrats, the abortion clinics (even though their clientele are predominately religious,) branches of science that show they are idiots, evolution, geology, astronomy, etc. When they run out of things to hate, they settle for hating each other. Every single sect finds things to hate about the next, because only “they” have it right.

The only war they are fighting is the one planted in their heads.

Let’s dump religion, and the hate please.

  5. Shelldigger…you are absolutely correct. Christianity is hate disguised as love and Islam…well I have no words

  6. This may not fit quite right but I’ll post it anywho. This is a quote from Cornel West; The fundamentalist Christian wants to be fundamental about everything except ‘Love thy neighbor’.
Oh and I have a nice cartoon that has little application to this post by my president but it does fir the blog title, or so I think.
This is the link to the cartoon.
    Hope the link works.

  7. That should read “fit” the blog title, not fir. Although somehow firing the Class Warfare sounds interesting. Yeah, I do have an odd sense of humor.

  8. 1. I will gladly shut up about it. I was quiet about it my entire life until recently.
    2. Them first. The only reason I mention atheism is as a *response* to theistic claims. If they weren’t spouting off about it daily, I’d never have to say anything.
    3. Christians have some nerve claiming to be persecuted. More than 70% of Americans claim to be religious, and something like 90% say they believe in God. We atheists/agnostics are a very strict minority (and only a small slice of us actively want to end religion). You just about can’t get elected to anything in the U.S. without claiming to be religious (usually Christian). Though I suspect Obama and Trump are *both* atheists, both claimed Christianity before making a serious run at the presidency.

Hypothetical scenario: In a particular elementary school, 70% of the students are bullies, 20% are bystanders, and 10% are victims. Why are the victims always complaining to the teachers about bullies? Why won’t the victims shut up about it?
