Effing Blundering Humans

What a perfect invention a human is, how noble in his capacity to reason, how unlimited in thinking, how admirable in his shape and movement, how angelic in action, how godlike in understanding! There’s nothing more beautiful. We surpass all other animals. (Hamlet, Shakespeare)

We use the term “civilized” as a complement and “uncivilized” as a criticism. We seem to be fans of civilization and “being civilized.” Unfortunately this is part of the self-propagating control mechanism which is culture. Culture exists so a few can control the many for the benefit of the few.

I was watching a documentary on the Americas before Columbus. I knew much of what they portrayed but to have it all thrust in my face at once made me see the big picture in alarming clarity.

The European conquest of Europe and then the Americas was a blundering, abysmal, staggeringly unenlightened display of brute force. The European’s animals and plants were brought onto this continent and then took over essentially every ecological niche available. Along with the pigs and barley and beer came European weeds and European diseases; smallpox itself was the cause of a majority of the Native Americans being killed. Native species of plants and animals died in front of a wave of horses, pigs, cattle, sheep and staple grains. The plow basically ruined the thin soil in New England that the Native Americans had been nurturing for millennia. Hogs rooted up vast acreage and spread diseases that native species had no ability to fight. Whole forests fell under the axes of the invaders.

Viewed in its entirety, this is a horror show. Genocide alongside ecological imperialism alongside greed alongside culture assassination.

And we call it civilization.

What I see is immense ignorance on display. A complete uncaring for the future of humans and a complete uncaring for anything that does not benefit humans. The definition of a “weed,” for example, is any plant unwanted by humans.

Arrogance, greed, immense ignorance, … aka civilized.

Are we any different now? Are events any different now?

Europeans used up Europe’s resources: cutting its trees, depleting its soils, spoiling its streams, and stripping its oceans of fish. Then they brought “civilization” to the Americas. And now the Americas are quite like Europe when the Americas were discovered.

Have we really learned anything?

I am not talking about academic knowledge, but cultural and political knowledge and actions. Have were learned to the “doing stage” any of the lessons we should have, lessons that will allow us to survive and other species alongside of us? If we have, I sure haven’t noticed that.

        • If any alien civilization advanced enough to arrive here actually did so, the results would most likely be horrible for us.

          • We are probably all here as banished outcasts from space anyway. Cast off the home planet for our destructive capitalistic religious pillaging of the planet. Don’t worry. We got this!

            • Seriously, us being descendants of an alien civilization is a hypothesis which lacks any evidence whatsoever. However, it is almost definite that all of the atoms in our bodies are the results of zillions of cycles of giant and supergiant stars either sloughing off their outer shells — enriched with elements beyond helium— or being blown to smithereens in supernovae or super violent neutron stars collisions. Every single atom in your body, excepting fraction of the hydrogen (as in H2O) is literally Stardust. And somehow or other (details unclear) that dust and those gases collapse into star and solar systems like our own…

          • I agree. But them maybe it is humans that are the common element in all such previous encounters that resulted badly for the “less civilized” people.

  2. OTOH, the Native Americans, while admirable in many respects, had a dark side as well. (They were after all, just as human as their later conquerors.)

I will offer just one example: the utterly and literally bloodthirsty Aztecs. They engaged in huge-scale massacres and orgies of cannibalism. They are recorded as having ritually murdered tens of thousands of their subjects in a single-day “festival”. Their priests loved to flay their victims and wear their skins. In that regard, who’s worse: the conquistadors? The Aztecs? the Nazis?or the ancient Romans with their mass murders in the Coluseum?

    • That’s was a nice visual. Where my dinner? Lol. Was the Aztec ritual religious in nature? I think that is the main point. We have a pretty clear view about bloodthirsty in the Christian Era, but are any of these genocide not religious in nature?

    • Who’s worse? In my book it is the guys who come from far away and take away your right to live the way you want to. Effing busybodies. Oh, they did it to plunder us? Well, then it is okay. All empires are built upon conquest and that means getting more people to do what the Masters of the Universe want, aka “not you.”

      • The Aztec were themselves imperialists. They demanded tribute in the form of food and people (food). The other local tribes were quite happy to join the Spaniards in helping to defeat the Aztecs.
The Aztecs, Romans and Nazis All built empires based on murder, exploitation and oppression of others.

        • Yep. All empires are built thus … and all are consider to be “good” for the civilization they bring. Nobody seems to want to ask the oppressed.

  3. As to Western civilization, I cannot but remind myself of what old Gandhi was supposed to have said about it. When asked what he thought of Western civilization, he supposedly said that “It would be a good thing”. Not that I see India as being much better than any other supposed civilization we have/had. Maybe some day humans will actually become civilized, but I am sure I’ll be long gone and forgotten by then.

    • Good point. While The British empire was not as big on overt mass genocide as others, they indirectly caused millions of third world deaths, especially in India. And the various rulers of the various sections of India from the earliest recorded dynasties to the Mughal or Sikh empires were not exactly Pacificist, either.

There have been some civilizations in which the gap between the wealthiest and poorest citizen has been pretty small — eg Athens. The houses of the Athenian leaders whose names we recount in history books are no grander than anybody else’s. (Yes I know this I was a slaveocracy and women had no voice whatsoever, but free male citizens during their democratic eras were in many ways really equal in status.)

  4. Thank you for stating what I have felt since I was a kid. I suppose it has to do with the lens we view our reality with. Most lenses are blinders.
