A Creationist Argument on This Winter’s Solstice

Obviously (I hope) this is not to scale!

We have just experienced yet another winter solstice, a date that heralds the beginning of winter. This is followed by a spring equinox, a summer solstice, then an autumn equinox, then the cycle repeats. This is all caused by the tilt of the axis that the Earth rotates about from the plane that it revolves about the Sun. Part of the year the north pole of the Earth points more toward the Sun and part of the year it points more away. When it is pointed more toward the Sun, it is warmer in the North, but cooler in the South, giving different characteristics to the seasons below the equator than above. This 23.5 degree tilt of the Earth’s axis from being perpendicular to the plane it rotates around the sun in, creates four perfect seasons on the planet. Not five, not three, but four, the perfect number of seasons.

Surely this complicated system could not have been created by chance, it must have required a creator.

If you believe this argument, congratulations, you are officially a fundamentalist Christian … and a number of other things equally obvious.

Happy Holidays!

  1. Damn you Emperor Constantine!

Happy Saturnalia! Mistletoe, wassail, feasting for the birth — not of some mythical human prophet — but of the new year.

    • Don’t worry, Jim. It’s just a made-up picture by some atheist who doesn’t know the real story. 🙂

  3. I’m afraid it’s not going to get any better here in the US. Hopefully Europe can keep rationality and a proper education in a world gone mad

    • One can only hope because our religious crazies are exporting their nonsense to the UK and Europe.

  5. I was on topic? How did I screw up? I go off on so many odd tangents, I’d be a pain to a trig teacher for sure. Yep, I’d need a cosine…….LOL.

  7. If God was so perfect with creating the climate, why did he put his supposedly favorite white people in the places with the worst climate, and let all those brown and yellow people have all the best tropical islands?

    • Could He have seen how shiftless and lazy all of those “coloreds” were and placed them somewhere they could survive, out of his inherent goodness? God must have placed white people in the harsher climates knowing our superior qualities would allow us to succeed anywhere, Certainly he would not set us a task we couldn’t do.

      Ah … no.

  8. LOL. This is very like the “sunsets” argument I heard recently. “Sunsets are awesome. Therefore God created the world.” Seriously. That was the entire argument from a Christian at work. I flapped my mouth open and shut several times, thinking I would speak, but could not find a single logical rebuttal.

Perhaps this is a new tactic of theirs: Say something so absurd that there’s no way to refute it. “Taco sideways jump tulip. Therefore God.” How do you argue? LOL.

    • I remember a woman who tweeted in Twitter that she needed half a cup of milk to make some recipe in her kitchen and she goes to the fridge and what does she find … a half a cup of milk, so she posts this along with “God id good!” Tens of thousands of children are starving around the world but since she had her lousy half cup of milk, she concludes “God is good.” Effing amazing.

      • LOL. I think I saw that one too. Middle class people in the U.S. post on Facebook that God helped them ace their history test or helped them find their car keys or other stupid things like this, while Christians in other countries can’t get fresh water or an education. God seems *much* more powerful when you have a good salary, a good home, and great health insurance.
