The End of the Debate

Well, at least part of it. There is an ongoing debate in this country over who was our best president, with Lincoln, Washington, and Franklin Roosevelt leading candidates. There was the flip side of that in the debate over who was the worst president, with James Buchanan, Warren Harding, and Andrew Johnson leading that pack. (For perspective G.W. Bush barely makes the top ten on the worst list.)

But this debate, at least the second half, is over for the foreseeable future. Donald J. Trump, even with his term of office barely half of a year gone, is on a trajectory to swamp any consideration of another for the “Worst President of All Time” honor.

As Diane Ravitch put it recently “Put together Trump’s vulgar, crude performance at the Boy Scouts Jamboree with the vulgar, crude language and behavior of The Mooch (the new Communications Director), and at some point you have to ask, like the line in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, ‘Who are those guys?’ No dignity. No class. No decency. No honor. No sense of propriety. Just plain old fashioned bullies and loudmouths. Know nothings. Vulgarians.

Yep, we are talking a slam dunk here. Can’t wait for the award ceremony. I suspect Mr. Trump will choose to speak while accepting his “honor.”

    • I was saying this from the get-go: Trump = distraction. There is no substance in the man; he is a political weather vane (Republican, Democrat, liberal, conservative, ideologue, pragmatist, he has been all of these).

      • I would describe him more as a puppet … with the strings being lop-sized most of the time, depending on who pulls the hardest.

        • If he is, he is the character in the puppet show who does nothing to further the plot. While he is being “managed” this is not at all overt, because I do not see that he can do anything substantive to impede the current plans of the plutocrats.

    • I doubt that Trump planned it. My impression is that his only ideology is ‘me’. But whoever is working on it is doing a pretty effective job, and the Democrats are cooperating – cooperating in a very striking way.”

Yep, Ryan is the monster, a complete and absolute asshole.

  4. I think you all continue to underestimate Trump. He is crude, politically incorrect, but he won! That is quite a feat in itself. Against all odds. Pretty remarkable. He says things other politicos are afraid of. None of them speak the truth, yet everyone is all the sudden aghast with fake outrage. This has been going on for quite some time. Presidents come and go, but rarely does anyone make it better.

    • It is one thing to say things others will not … when it is a difficult truth, but to say things others will not because it is deplorable is not admirable.

  5. Nonsense. You need to 1) give him a chance 2) go look at presidents in all history because worst of all time is a huge title and 3) look at the circumstances of history

  6. Lol here is my response: to call anyone the worst president of all time, after not even one year in office is like calling a sports team the worst ever after 2 games. Not only can you not do that, but if you weren’t so biased, you would see things are not as you think they are. As I was told 8 years ago, give him a chance. Show him respect

    • Showing respect is where I started, saluting the uniform, not the man. But respect is earned and can be lost by bad actions. Respectable people behave as if their reputations are valuable.

I can’t imagine any previous president, having available to him the ability to speak to the American people at the drop of a hat (not a weekly broadcast as all since Franklin Roosevelt have had, or press conferences) would occupy his time whining about the press, or commenting on people’s appearances, or anything other than pushing his agenda for a better country.

By crowning Mr. Trump as I have I am merely regarding his performance so far as meriting that award, even if he retired from public life this very minute. I have observed incompetence, belligerence, and criminality in presidents but this is the first time I have observed sheer awfulness. I admit it has been a very long time since there was a president I could approve of in toto (I liked Mr. Obama’s demeanor, but not much of his politics.) but I have yet to find anything in Mr. Trump’s actions I could label laudable.

I totally agree! I gave him “a chance” at the very beginning in hopes my opinion was in error. But he’s turned out to be everything I suspected and for that reason, in my book, he doesn’t deserve “respect.”
