The New Administration’s Budget

As vague descriptions of the new administration’s 2017-8 federal budget are being circulated, people are shocked, shocked I tell you, that that proposal eviscerates the Environmental Protection Agency and myriad other federal programs that actually help people (Meals on Wheels … gone, Support for Planned Parenthood … gone).

I do not see how anyone could be shocked at these long promised moves. This is the political party that has railed against and taken every opportunity to diminish labor unions, organizations that only exist to protect workers and their rights. It has also railed against Social Security and Medicare, the two most successful programs ever created to avoid poverty, especially in senior citizens.

They have reasons for doing these things, but if you watch carefully, you will see their lips moving, a clear sign they are lying. They are gutting these social programs for one big reason, their paymasters desire it. All of these efforts make working class people more compliant, less likely to strike back, and place as little opposition to what the plutocrats wish to do as possible.

The GOP said it wanted to, it tried to do it before, and now it is doing it. If you are surprised, you are an idiot.

Let me now … warn you in the most solemn manner against the baneful effects of the spirit of party….
It serves always to distract the public councils and enfeeble the public administration.
It agitates the community with ill founded jealousies and false alarms,
kindles the animosity of one part against another….

George Washington, Farewell Address, 1796

In this new era of globalization, the interests of companies and countries have diverged.
In contrast with the past, what is good for America’s global corporations
is no longer necessarily good for the American people.

Ralph Gomory, Former IBM VP

Wake up people, the corporations own this administration.

  1. This is sickening to watch unfold. I am blown away at the total lack of concern for the people and the environment, in the actions this administration is taking. This is the trumpet they have been sounding all along. The idiot voters just weren’t listening. They were hearing what they thought they wanted to hear.

    • Nope, you missed all of the points. The people voted the way they did: for Bernie, for trump, because they were fed up with the status quo (the neoliberal enriching of the 0.1% at the expense of all of the rest of us).

And all of these cuts are not in an actual budget, they are in a “budget document” aka smokescreen, barrage of bullshit, shock doc, etc. Their purpose is to rile up as many people as possible, so they will relax when the budget is restored to the status quo, and to get concessions on other things. This is a typical hard ball negotiating technique. Threaten to take away their Nintendo unless they clean their room. Once the room is clean, the Nintendo threat is withdrawn. See, even parents use this technique.

      • Not the first time I missed the point! 🙂 In fact I often wonder what was the point… 🙂

But if they were reacting against the status quo, how in the F did they think Trump, was going to help the situation?

Ahh I had suspected a bit of what you allude to, the hardball trading technique, but it still remains to be seen just how much of that is B.S. Right now it looks like they mean it, and likely have more up their sleeves.

        • Trump … outsider … all that is need for, what do they call them? Low Information Voters!

They even thought he was a good business man! Amazing! Our news media really let us down. If a guy is going to run on his business reputation, they should have given him a grade of D- as a business man. Somebody calculated that if he had put the money he inherited into index funds and left it there, he would have four times the amount of money he claims to have now. So, his business acumen was enough to only lose three quarters of his fortune.

    • Yeah, the Repubs have been threatening a whole bunch of things but they do not really want to carry most of them out (torches, pitchforks, etc. … they are allergic to). It is to be able to claim they tried to cut the budget, but … they tried to fulfill their campaign promises, but … all of which goes to support their meme that Washington is out of control and the Repubs need to be left in charge to continue to hack away at the Administrative State (what we used to call “the Bureaucracy”). Some repubs will come off as heros for restoring some of these budget items to “status quo” and the agencies so threatened will have their heads down for years. There will be no clamoring for budget increases.

  2. And it should be noted, this isn’t one of those “Trump being Trump” things that go against the Republican party’s orthodoxy. This is the party orthodoxy.

  4. Corporations own every administration. Period. It is our American system. The greatest lie is that corporations do not own the Democratic Party in equal measure. Just look at the list of corporate ceo’s Obama took to Havana with him last year.

    • Yep. But the Dems are cover for the plutocrats. every once in a while they accidentally do something for ordinary citizens. If the Dems also had the same goals as the GOP, there would be torches and pitchforks on the plutocrats, first, second, third, and fourth home’s lawns.

      • As long as ordinary Americans retain belief in the myth of upward mobility they will back the oligarchy … ‘more’ is the carrot … fuck the 60% of the world living on less than $600 a year.

          • I am okay. Fine, as a matter of fact. Not bitter at all. But I am tired of a collective American self critique that does not take into proper account the percentage of the world comprised of Americans in relation to the percentage of the world’s wealth consumed by Americans, and the changes required to American consumption to even begin to talk about bringing economic justice to the rest of the world. Seems to me that we Americans must deal with our collective lust for unlimited ‘more’ in relationship to what most of the earth’s people actually have access to … spent my childhood until age 16 living in a third world country, and that experience affects how I see things … to this day. The promise of an upwardly mobile American middle class (without true ownership and power) is, maybe the great con job of human history … ensuring that American workers will always support the oligarchy that robs the rest of the planet … for the promise of ‘more.’ My fallback position remains “but what the fuck do I know.” But I think about it every single day…60% of my fellow humans live on less than $600 a year. And that certainly puts my own life and struggles in a more accurate light.

            • But YHWH promised us dominion, along with Ted Cruz’s dad, anyway, so being able to rape the environment and the proles is a god-given right, no?

  5. Or as George Carlin said:

“Muhammad Ali, Muhammad Ali, Muhammad Ali-
    It’s a nice musical name…Muhammad Ali.

He’s back at work again; he’s being allowed to work once again, Muhammad Ali. He wasn’t for awhile, as you know. For about three and a half years, they didn’t let him work. ‘Course he had an unusual job, beating people up. It’s a strange calling, y’know? But it’s one you’re entitled to. Government didn’t see it that way. Government wanted him to change jobs. Government wanted him to kill people. He said, “No, that’s where I draw the line. I’ll beat ’em up, but I don’t wanna kill ’em.” And the government said, “Well, if you won’t kill ’em, we won’t let you beat ’em up! Ah, ha, ha, ha.”

It was a spiteful move, y’know. All because he didn’t want to go to Vietnam. And now, of course, we’re leaving Vietnam…(makes explosion sound) We’re leaving through Laos, Cambodia and Thailand. It’s the overland route. It’s the long way out. Ya gotta go through China and Russia to get out that way. What’ll we tell them, man? “We’ll only be here six weeks. Just looking for the Ho Chi Minh Trail!” Wow. Maybe they’ll buy it, y’know. Of course, you have to remember why we’re over there in the first place…(pause, then applause) Oh, yeah! It always comes to me. To free those people…So they can have industry- yeah! US industry- YEAH! Those are the middle two letters of the word ‘industry’..US. And that is our job around the world. Run in, free some people and whip a little industry on them. “Here’s your industry. Cool it awhile, willya?” So that they can have the benefits of industry that we have come to enjoy…COUGH!

    (sings)
    Oh, beautiful
    for smoggy skies
    insecticided grain
    For strip mined mountains majesty
    above the asphalt plain
    America, America
Man sheds his waste on thee
    and hides the pines
    with billboard signs
    from sea to oily sea-eee!”

    • We need a memorial tomb for George Carlin on the Mall in Washington, D.C./ The only person of public note who told the truth in the last 100 years.
