… Because the Bible Tells Me So … ♫

The United Nations Security Council has condemned the building of Israeli settlements on territory captured by Israel in its 1967 war with its Arab neighbors (including the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem). This is quite an unusual occurrence because the U.S., a permanent member of that Council, has traditionally vetoed any such criticisms of Israel but did not this time. Israel, in response, is “re-evaluating its relationship to the U.N.” including a few million dollars it pays to support U.N. activities. That support made possible, we presume, by the hundreds of millions of dollars given to Israeli annually by the U.S.

One news report stated “Most countries view Israeli settlement activity in the West Bank and East Jerusalem as illegal and an obstacle to peace. Israel disagrees, citing a biblical connection to the land.

WTF? “… a biblical connection to the land”?

The Israelis are still playing the Bible card? After all Jewish scholars have basically conceded that the Pentateuch and other early “history” books of the Bible are basically fiction and “biblical archaeologists” have found no evidence for the conquest of the “Holy Land” described therein. Without that “conquest” then Israelis have an argument that they have been inhabitants of that region for a long time, but not an argument for being the sole inhabitant or ruling faction in order to support a sole right to possession of that land.

My guess is that the “Bible card,” like the “race card” in this country, will continue to be played as long as it has the desired affect, regardless of whether there is any merit to it. For those who ask “What’s the harm in believing the Bible?” you can add Israel’s intransigence in making peace with their fellow men because they are “special.” Hmm, I wonder if Israelis describe themselves using the term “Israeli exceptionalism?”

  1. Particularly annoying in this US ‘abstention’ is the lack of reporting and commentary that Obama has been a blank check to the Israeli right wing with money and weapons. Record levels. And now he postures for legacy. Projectile vomit time.

    • If we do not put pressure on Israel, they will consider themselves invulnerable.

  2. They are invulnerable … the pressure is smoke and mirrors … all show. ANY U.S. President will blow up the world to support Israel.

  3. CNN actually had an Amona Settler citing the bible passages she thought gave *her* specific claim to the land.

    • My point being that if anyone accepts that bogus claim, then other claims need not be made. It is sad.

  4. That “biblical” connection to the land is completely ridiculous, but it’s undeniable that Israel has a historical connection to the land, just as the Arabs do.
To me, it was also worth noting that news story chose to present Israel’s most ludicrous reason for settlement activity while fully legitimising the opposition by stating that “most countries think it’s illegal”. I think that the settlements are a bad idea, but I think they operate in a legal gray area since they are in the land last held by Jordan but no longer claimed by Jordan. And I don’t think it’s out of realm of possibility that many of these settlements can simply be included in the Arab state when the two-state solution finally gets implemented. After all, if Arabs can live in the Jewish state, why can’t Jews live in the Arab state?

  5. They could, theoretically … but I do not see that option being acceptable to enough of the Israeli population to be viable. Nor do I see a U.S. supported Israel ever extending equal rights and status to Palestinians, let alone granting a two state solution.

    • Which is the problem. No solution is acceptable to the Right-wing Israeli government. I tend to think they are past the tipping point in any case, that it is too late to avoid war or any other very bad solution.

      • I dispute that the posturing is in the right direction. The flow of dollars and weapons facilitated to Israel by Obama (and every other President) allows Israel to do whatever they want with respect to oppression of the Palestinian people. What’s the U.N. going to do? Send troops in to take back the land stolen from the Palestinians at the end of WW 2 to create Israel in the first place?

        • Obviously, anything that pushes Israel in the direction of being more reasonable is a good thing. Of course, it will take a lot more pushing to get it to move much at all. They keep electing Benji whose views seem to run counter to the wishes of the general electorate, but that is a failure of the opposition to put up better candidates, just like here.

As, I have said, I think Israel is past the tipping point and what is going to happen down the road is nothing we can do anything about.

          • My point is that we are not pushing Israel in the right direction. We are increasing dollars and weapons to Israel every day. That is what counts, not a ‘for show’ U.N. abstention blatantly designed to bolster Obama’s legacy. During his presidency he has been as big a problem as anybody in building up all the worst tendencies in Israel. Guess I don’t buy tokens as helpful anymore. Does sound like we kind of agree: “past the tipping point” … or, we are fucked.

          • Perhaps not. From what i understand the majority of Jews are quite liberal. The settlements (especially those in the last few years) are pure madness.

              • It has to, or else in 10 years Israel will not be able to be a “democracy” and a “Jewish state.” The demographic-shift just isn’t on their side, so something has to give.

                • One would hope. My ongoing concern is the mindless determination in the Israeli and U.S. government to protect Israel at all cost. And as Steve said: “They keep electing Benji.”

  7. Not sure if this is strictly “on topic,” but something that’s bothered me for many years is the fact that Israel supposedly holds this “special place” in the politics of the U.S. I’m not addressing the Palestinian/Israeli situation. I’m talking about the country itself … because … it’s the home of “God’s people.” And this nation being a “Christian Nation” and all, we simply must be on the side of our “ancestors.”

If we viewed this country with the same dispassionate perspective as we do some other countries, I wonder if our position on various issues might be much different.

    • I think it has to do more with Jewish political donations and the Jewish vote. Go against Israel and you could lose up to 2% of the votes (only if you are a Democrat). Also it is said that half of all Democratic contributions are from Jews.
