We should have elected ex-Governor of Texas Rick Perry on the basis of the Texas Miracle alone, it being the way the state of Texas sailed through our weak economic times on a wave of conservative values and economics.
Even Dallas, uh … oh, wait … according to DealBook “Dallas has the fastest economic growth of the nation’s 13 largest cities. Its streets hum with supersize cars and its skyline bristles with cranes. Its mayor is a former chief executive of Pizza Hut. Hundreds of multinational corporations have chosen Dallas for their headquarters, most recently Jacobs Engineering, which is moving to low-tax Texas from pricey Pasadena, Calif.
“But under its glittering surface, Dallas has a problem that could bring it to its knees, and that could be an early test of America’s postelection commitment to safe streets and tax relief: The city’s pension fund for its police officers and firefighters is near collapse and seeking an immense bailout.
“Dallas’s mayor, Michael S. Rawlings, testifying this month to a state oversight board that his city appeared to be ‘walking into the fan blades’ of municipal bankruptcy.”
Oh. Gonna be hard to blame this on on Them Liberals.

Read about this in the NYTimes. You see Dallas is a Democratic Party stronghold. Read the comments, it is all the Unions and the Democrats fault. The main culprit appears to be using the pension funds to finance real estate deals to pay for the sweet deal retirement the police and firefighters get. Guess what? The big boondoggle finally caught up when the mega condo failed. Hmmm sounds familiar doesn’t it? Using pension funds for other things? Naw couldn’t happen.

I think that Texas’s smooth economic sailing was due more to its oil industry than to wise leadership of Rick Perry.

I think you can safely say it was due to Texas being a low cost state for most things. All of the jobs Gov. Perry was bragging about were predominately low paying ones (relative to pay elsewhere). Basically they were saying we can keep wages lower than anyone else.
It is amazing that the cost of living in this country was grossly inflated by the same people currently trying to depress wages that allow anyone to afford a decent lifestyle.

I think low cost was a contributing factor, but not the main one – Kansas and Mississippi have comparable costs but aren’t exactly prospering.

That was my point. Should we believe lying politicians and lying economists about anything like this. Dallas was supposedly the crown jewel of the Texas Miracle but in reality it is just another instance of political mismanagement.
