Let’s See, That’s $10.4 Million Per Day . . .

Apparently the Obama administration has agreed to give Israel a record $38 billion in new military aid over the next decade, including $5 billion for missile defense. The package is “a reminder of the United States’ commitment to Israel,” according to National Security Adviser Susan Rice.

Hey, that’s some nice reminder! (I still miss George Carlin!)

That’s … uh, let’s see, uh … $10,400,000 every day of every year for the next decade. And, this, of course, is on top of what we already give to the Israelis with, apparently, no strings attached. My guess is that money just couldn’t be spent on crumbling roads and bridges because, well the construction lobby is just not as powerful as it used to be, what with so many of their workers being out of work (and voting for Trump?).

Do you think this is for all of the good behavior exhibited by Israel over Mr. Obama’s tenure. About how the nice they are making with the Palestinians? About how they are peacefully settling their differences with those who live in the Gaza strip? About the peace process progress? About how they have curtailed illegal settlement building? About how they have stopped adding on to the divisive wall? About how Mr. Netanyahu came and said nice things to our Congress?

I sincerely hope not because none of that happened. In fact I am hard put to be able to identify the reasons for such a bonus. Maybe it is the fact the Israelis have to spend that money in the company store. Maybe it is because it is an election year and the Jewish vote has established that it can be bought. Hard to tell.

And how come the Republicans let this go through? I thought they were against foreign aid? And, oh my, how are we supposed to pay for this when we can’t pay our bills nor? What were the Repubs thinking?

  1. I’m no expert, but it’s been my understanding for a long, long time that Israel is “special” because of their place in biblical history. And since the U.S. is a “Christian Nation,” it must be god-approved that we assist them with the one thing we seem to have plenty of … M.O.N.E.Y.

    • Ah, I wouldn’t put it past our know-nothing politicians to drum up something as insane, but this clearly can’t be a Christian nation because all Americans worship … money.

                • I hate that when corpses just vanish! happens to me all of the time.

I am reading an interesting book about the time period in which it was decided that Jesus wasn’t just sent by God, he was god. The players used gangs of thugs, beatings and maimings of opponent theocrats, and political tricks of high order to gain ascendancy. If anyone thinks this had to do with scripture or God’s will, I suggest they read such books. False accusations of sexual improprieties, charges of heresy when there was no dogma other than what you decided was true and good. Sucking up massively to Roman emperors (this is the sad thing, all of these bishops not far from a time in which Rome oppressed Israel heavily were sucking the Roman emperor’s nether appendage for little scraps of authority sent their way. Amazing!

  2. Big international money was behind the 08 and 12 elections of Obama … that is why he won the presidency. He serves the military/corporate powers. And his chosen successor, HRC, will do the same. These are the people nominated and elected…the way it works. This expanded support of Israel should be a surprise to anyone. But of course the good ol’ USA is impartial and wants peace. Right.

      • “Shoudn’t” be a surprise … no one will ever get elected in this country without supporting this kind of support to Israel. Consider how the entire power structure shit bricks sideways when Bernie dared to suggest that Palestinians were victims of Israeli aggression.

        • Yeah, but we are already buying them breakfast, lunch, and dinner, why tip them, too?

I have heard that U.S> aid id such a drop in the bucket that Israel can afford to walk out of their deal. But when your big brother is no longer standing right behind you, the bullies get a lot more brave. I think they need us far more than we need them.

  4. Actually, you are off by a power of ten. It works out to ‘only’ about 10 million dollars a day for the next ten years, not 100 million per day.
It’s still a bloody ridiculous amount of cash.

    • Egad, and I was so careful to enter 3.8 billion into my calculator and divide by 365. So, I rechecked and found out that my calculator stops accepting digits as some point when entering large numbers. I needed to use exponential notation and didn’t notice. Thanks for catching the mistake. I should have caught it myself as at 100 million a day, that’s a billion every 10 days and that is way too fast.

  5. To correct your math, it’s $10 million, not $100 million a day, and I believe Israel has to spend all this money buying American military hardware. So it’s a giveaway to both Israel and our military contractors.

  6. It’ll always be political suicide to disavow Israel in just about any form. The Party out of power will always use it against their adversaries and AIPAC will make sure all of their money goes to the candidate who attaches them selves to the state of Israel more. The moral compass is ignored when it comes to the Israeli/Palestinian problem for US politicians

    • Which is surprising because the Israel lobby isn’t all that large. And losses to it would be offset by gains in Palestinian and Arab U.S. populations. But, politicians haven’t exactly been noted for their courage.
