WTF? Further Government Shilling for Tech Companies

I just got a message from the ’Merican Guvmint that they are required by Executive Action to provide an additional layer of security to my Social Security online account, my “my Social Security” account.

To access my account in the future, I must supply a cell phone number that can receive texts to which an automated code will be sent, which when entered will allow me to view my account. Then they dropped the hammer:

If you do not have a text-enabled cell phone or you do not wish to provide your cell phone number, you will not be able to access your my Social Security account.

In other words, if you are poor or elderly and not tech savvy, well FUCK YOU, write us a letter and drop in a post box (which we have eliminated) or hand it to your local postman (which we are in the process of eliminating) or take to your local post office (which we are in the process of eliminating). But, in any case, fuck you, fuck you very much. <signed> Your Federal Government

  1. Appalling, but unsurprising.

  2. Are you SURE this was from the ‘Merican Govmint? Sounds pretty fishy (scammy) to me.

    • Well, they were directing me to go to my account but didn’t provide a link, so I think we can safely say they are the real deal. I hadn’t thought of scammers, but you might just be right.

    • Says it doesn’t start until August but maybe they are batching the trillion emails they would have to send out. Let’s see Steve and Sylvia both start with S … hmmm.

  5. I will check on Monday August to see if the SSA is actually behind this. Hey, do you think it is dirty tricks by the Trump campaign to confuse senior citizens so we will be even more anti-government … or maybe get so confused that we will forget to vote? ;o)

  6. Take a look at this: https://secure.ssa.gov/RIL/HpsView.do

    • No mention of the “new layer” of security, which is a standard scheme being push by a great many folks. I will check on Monday when they say this new system goes into effect.

  8. In their defense, if someone already has an access to online account, there’s a good chance they aren’t destitute and have a cell phone as well.

    • Thanks, it appears that the email was a scam. I will double check by going onto the SASA.gov site but it looks clear that the SSA is innocent and I take back my hasty criticisms.

    • Okay I take back my taking back of my criticism. I went to the SSA site and indeed have to give them a cell phone number and they give me a texted code that I must enter to see my count.

All of my criticism are, I think, valid (although they do not apply to me they certainly apply to a great many people).
