Self-Determination, Anyone?

I believe in self-determination.

The overthrow of the president of Ukraine has revealed a life of personal opulence, supportable only by bribes and corruption. Anyone surprised? Anyone? Please note that all of this occurred with much handwringing by actors outside of Ukraine: Russia, the U.S., the E.U., possibly more. But while there was a diplomatic scurry, there doesn’t seem to have been overt actions taken to support either side in the dispute.

I believe in self-determination. I believe that the citizens of Ukraine have a right to settle their own hash: peacefully would be nice but violently also.

But what about North Korea, where the government oppresses the people in unspeakable ways? We should intervene there, no?

I believe in self-determination. The people of Egypt had been oppressed by it’s own President and secret police and army for decades. They rose up and defeated an entrenched tyrant. When the people of Korea do likewise, they may find that their army may support them like Egypt’s army supported its rebellion. Or maybe not.

I believe in self-determination.

I believe that each state in the United States has the right to make their own decisions and that out-of-state political money should be barred. (It is called influence peddling and it is illegal.) I believe that each city in the United States has the right to make their own decisions and that out-of-city political money should be barred. (It is called influence peddling and it is illegal.) I believe that each voting district in the United States has the right to make their own decisions and that out-of-district political money should be barred. (It is called influence peddling and it is illegal.)

I believe in self-determination. Interference from outside of any group can only be to counter the activities of the people inside the group.

Until we clean up our foreign policy so that it is non-interventionist and we clean up campaign finance laws to eliminate outsider influence, we will be living in something other than the democracy we want.

  1. “money should be barred”,/i>

But the SC says money is speech and is protected under the constitution. How convenient for those who have a lot to “say”.

    • Yes, another faux paux by SCOTUS, still free speech is one thing campaign donations another. They can speak all they want, but direct campaign support with money isn’t a speech. Let them by ads (clearly labeled as “Paid for by Ousiders”) that say “We Support XYZ” that is free speech.

  2. It is impossible to believe in both self-determination and Big Government programs like ObamaCare, global warming, the minimum wage and federally mandated Welfare and Social Security.

  3. So simple, yet so true. The question is: how on earth are you all going to get the (external) $$$ out of politics?

    • “how on earth are you all going to get the (external) $$$ out of politics?”

It will be nearly impossible. There’s money being spent now that we can’t even account for. I reference the Deep State in my blog post tomorrow but here’s a great article on it over at Moyers & Co. that will blow your mind about this concealed government of ours.

      • The link doesn’t seem to work, Larry. But i will look forward to your coming article. I think this is the greatest problem (root of the problems) facing US politics today.

        • The “Dark State” entails the NSA, the Defense Department, Homeland Security and even the Treasury Dept.. It is the link between Treasury and Wall Street that feeds the entire clandestine complex. My post focuses on Wall Street and the growing plutocracy in this country but knowing now how intertwined they already are with a government outside of our government merely gives greater credibility to the premise that our democracy is already on a downward slope.

    • What you don’t remember my grand plan? I wrote about this ad nauseum, I thought!

But at this point I would go for public financing of elections and tight regulations on disclosure of any and all political moneys being spent, even though I opposed those in the past.

      • Hadn’t seen that essay before. 2010 was before my time, but you should re-post it. It’s sound.
