Further Thoughts on Corporate Religious Rights

The current attempt on the part of whomever to give corporations not only free speech political rights but also freedom of religious conviction political rights provides no end to interesting thoughts.

Business owners form corporations to protect themselves from personal risk. If a corporation gets into real financial trouble, it can “die” and free the owners from the debts of the corporation. (I have done this myself! Bwa ha ha!) So, the fiction of a corporation being a “person” for commercial reasons has becoming institutionalized, over the last 150 years or so, for that reason. Which is also why we were shocked that the Supreme Court gave political free speech rights to corporations when they had no such political rights of any kind prior to that.

So, let’s just go ahead and speculate what happens if the Supreme Court recognizes that corporations have rights associated with religion. Well, that will give them protection from the ACA’s requirement that employer provided health insurance include birth control services, for example. But what else?

If the Supreme Court buys this argument, then we must assume that corporations will suffer a penalty if they violate their religion’s dogma. Sure, Catholic corporations can always do penance and I wouldn’t be surprised that the Church reinstitutes indulgences when they realize how much wrong doing corporations do and how much money they have in the form of cash reserves. But if a mortal sin is committed, does this mean the corporation does not go to Heaven when it dies, that instead it goes to Hell? If corporations do go to Heaven to sit at the feet of God singing hosannas, what outward form will they have? Will God be pleased by this?

And, what happens if a corporation suffers a hostile takeover and a majority of its stock is then held by Muslims? Oh, boy. Here is the backdoor by which Sharia law gets incorporated into our laws! How would the government prevent Sharia law being enforced in the workplace if they would be violating that corporation’s religious rights by doing so?

And once it is acknowledged in the workplace, what is next? Damn! And all of those Muslim Saudis who have gotten rich selling us oil, will start buying up U.S. corporations and implementing Sharia law and then, the next thing you know, we will have a Muslim government, that will appoint Sharia spouting Supreme Court Justices!

Just sayin’. Every once in a while it feels good to indulge in conservative logic.

  1. NAILED IT!! Yes, let some Muslim freakshow take majority share in a company, any company, and enforce Sharia!! Hell, i’m sure we can find some Hindu business who’ll play ball? What about Buddhists?

    Oh, Steve, you evil genius!

  2. Another natural step would be to declare a corporation to be a religious organization, and get a full exemption from taxes.
