The State of Texas, home of ten gallon hats, creationism, and iconoclasts, has done something really interesting. It passed a law preventing educational testing lobbying groups from making political contributions to state politicians. If this law holds up, it is the first step on a very good path. The only thing they left out is . . . all of the other lobbying groups.
The constitution guarantees the right of citizens, individually or in groups, to petition their representatives. It does not give them the right to bribe them.

I’d allow for individuals to contribute, but only in reasonable amounts. More money just drives up the costs of everything but oesn’t change anything. In the mid-1970’s in California, there was a housing boom. Basically the prices of houses doubled in just a few years. The houses didn’t change, just the prices. Same thing is true in politics. Did you notice how much better the political ads were in the last election here? No? Neither did I and the billions spent didn’t improve the outcome at all.

I have always admired the spirit of Texans, it was their brains I wondered about (e.g. their ideas about zoning ordinances being infringements on liberty). Here it seems as if good judgment hasn’t been run out of town … yet.
Cheers!
