Are Bill Gates Ideas “Better” Than Yours? You Betcha!

A while back I wrote a post “Bill Gte’s Ideas Are Better than Yours” and lately I have been writing a lot about the corporate hostile takeover of public education, the centerpiece of which are the Common Core State (sic) Standards. Well, guess you bought and piad for the CCSS? You gotta read this if you care at all about public education: A Brief Audit of Bill Gates’ Common Core Spending.

  1. I don’t really understand what all this is, but I like Patrick Walsh’s comment.

    • The federal government is prohibited, by law, from promoting or requiring the imposition of standards or curriculum to qualify for federal education funds. The Common Core State (sic) Standards are being pushed as a collective effort of all constiuents of public education to “reform the system.” But parents weren’t involved, neither were children, and neither were teachers until it was too late to change anything. The Dept of Ed then strong armed states into adopting the “State Standards” of CCSS and 45 of the 50 states did. Teachers were then told to implement the standards (with no testing ar trails at all) and tests were developed to test those standards and have already been administered.

Given that they require keyboarding skills from six-year olds, the tests are somewhat problematic. Given that the assumption that all students will be going to college and majoring in an academic subject means the standards are more than a little problematic. The fact that experts have examined the standards and find them hopelessly out of touch with reality … I think you get the point. But these things are being implemented because of Bill Gate’s money and the Dept. Of Ed.’s illegal backing, and another wave of “reform” rolls through America’s education system, leaving chaos in its wake. Some think that conservatives are gleeful that thie will further besmirch the reputation of our schools (which were on a gradual improvement trend) and lead to even more privitization, e.g. profits for educational contractors (plus profits for testing companies (which were heavily involved in the drafting of the standards, curiously)).
